Bipartisan Group Eyes Independent Bid

First, Main Candidates Urged To Plan 'Unity' Government

By David S. Broder
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, December 30, 2007; A04

New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, a potential independent candidate for president, has scheduled a meeting next week with a dozen leading Democrats and Republicans, who will join him in challenging the major-party contenders to spell out their plans for forming a "government of national unity" to end the gridlock in Washington.

Those who will be at the Jan. 7 session at the University of Oklahoma say that if the likely nominees of the two parties do not pledge to "go beyond tokenism" in building an administration that seeks national consensus, they will be prepared to back Bloomberg or someone else in a third-party campaign for president.

Conveners of the meeting include such prominent Democrats as former senators Sam Nunn (Ga.), Charles S. Robb (Va.) and David L. Boren (Okla.), and former presidential candidate Gary Hart. Republican organizers include Sen. Chuck Hagel (Neb.), former party chairman Bill Brock, former senator John Danforth (Mo.) and former New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman.

people will be quick to mention perot, but perot actually stood for something. bloomberg stands for bloomberg: an annoying little rich red sox fan with a serious short man complex and a butt-load of cash burning a hole in his pocket. he ran as a republican for mayor because he could never have gotten the democratic nomination and knew the short sighted gop power base in the city would be blinded by dollar signs. once in office he witched to an independent. he's in truth a bloombergian first and foremost and always. the american people may be easily led, but they can smell a phony.

Everything Papa said, PLUS:

NYC is only running because of what Guiliani did in office.

The Twin Towers fell on Sept 11, 2001. To date, there are still no buildings to replace them. But expensive condos seem to pop up overnight. Bloomberg couldn't move that project along.

Last Christmas the MTA went on strike. What was Bloomberg's suggestion? He went out and bought an $800 bike and urged everyone else to do the same. Of course everyone using public transportation has $800 laying around. We all just ride the subway for the fun of it.

Bloomberg is the head of the Nanny State. In NYC, he has banned smoking in bars. (I am not a smoker, but even I think it's OK in bars). Instead, the smokers have to stand outside and smoke and pedestrians have to walk through clouds of smoke and cigarette butts.

He also made it difficult for restaurants cooking with certain oils. Why not have the restaurants acknowledge what they cook with and let the diners make the decision?

He ordered NYC apartments to get carbon monoxide detectors. And of course, the residents had to pay for them.

Bloomberg thinks that everyone can shell out money on a whim for whatever purpose he deems necessary.

"NYC is only running because of what Guiliani did in office."

IMO, the city of New York lost more character and a bit of its soul under Guiliani, more than under any other major in recent history. There is more to a city than just buildings.

"American people can smell a phony"?

They fell for George W. (twice).

Not to mention, what did Perot actually "stand for"? He was a great advertisement for Ritalin, I admit.

I don't know if Bloomberg is the right man for the job, but I'd welcome an independent. In an era when political debate has been taken over by the likes of Limbaugh, Coulter, and Beck, who insult their opponents without addressing the issues they raise--where solving problems has become second in importance to shouting down and vilifying the other side--a candidate who wasn't just trying to suck up to the maximum number of Republicans and/or Democrats would be refreshing.

How can Dubya believe what he's saying when he can't even pronounce what he's saying, let along understand what he's saying?

So we need more Perots? Or do we need several Presidents at once? One to balance the budget, one for foreign policy, one for every "special interest" issue, etc., etc.....

Without getting into a big discussion about should Times Square be "porn street" or "family friendly", Guiliani did clean up the theater district and made it more tourist friendly. In the long run, he did help the theater industry. You may not like the shows that Disney is producing, but they do keep theater people working and we do have some nice theaters on 42nd Street that weren't there pre-Guiliani.

no, the only point was that perot stood for something - an easily identifiable cause about which many people at that time felt very strongly. bloomberg stands for nothing but bloomberg and is all over the map. perot was able to gain the support he did because he hit a nerve with people and people trusted him to be able to do something about a specific issue. all bloomberg does is get on people's nerves.

I think it's a little late to unify anything in politics.
