NYC Restaurant Suggestion#1
Posted: 12/29/07 at 1:00pm
A friend is turning 21 on the 8th, and we're trying to plan a birthday dinner for her. They'll be around 7 or 8 people; we're looking for a place that's trendy with nice atmosphere. No food preference, but we'd like something not too pricey since we're all poor college kids. Any suggestions to get the ball rolling would be so helpful. Thanks!

I would suggest taking her to Ruby Foos. There is one in Times Square. It is trendy but pricey.

Another inexpensive option:
Not trendy but wonderful food, inexpensive and free wine.
The Cottage on West 77th and Amstedam.
For 8 you can make a reservation. It is fun and inexpensive but not trendy.

It is hard to find trendy and cheap.

If you want a great place for cheap drinks that is trendy, go to Bamboo 52. The food is moderate but the drinks are 4-5 dollars and they are wonderful.

The spotted pig is very expensive for poor college kids.
I would go to Bamboo 52 for the happy hour as long as you are all of age. You can't beat $4 fruity drinks in NYC.
After, go to John's pizza in Times Square for an inexpensive and fabulous dinner.

Corine, do you get paid off by these restaurants? Ruby Foo's? BS overpriced tourist trap.

Ruby Foos is terrible if you want to actually have a conversation.

I would recommend Social (http://www.socialbarnyc.com/)

Nice atmosphere - and decently priced food. Not to mention there's a nice area in back if you have enough people and can arrange it ahead of time.

I love the sushi at Ruby Foos. No, I don't get paid. I think John's is very affordable and great pizza. It is inexpensive for a large group and decent atmosphere.

Rosa Mexicano. There's a few locations around the city. I love the atmosphere there- great for a birthday. It's one of my favorite places.

"John's Pizza for a "fabulous" dinner?"

Agreed. The place is convenient if you're in a bind, but the food is only fair.

I love Rosa Mexicano! I've been to the one by Lincoln Center. Great food, great atmosphere. And not too expensive. They make your guacamole fresh for you at your table. It's the best.

John's Pizza isn't where a bunch of 21 year olds ready to drink want to go. Perhaps if they just won their little league game or finished their regional production of Guys and Dolls.

Rosa's is good.. and there really are a bunch of fun places on 9th near the theater district - just go and pick one..

"The spotted pig is very expensive for poor college kids."

I think for a "trendy" restaurant The Spotted Pig is quite reasonable. If they want something that's just really cheap then why not just to to McDonald's?

I love Rosa Mexicana but it is very pricey.
I love the pomegranite margarita's. It is a great place.
Personally like Zarela the best on the UES.
The average dish at Rosa Mexicana is $21.00. I can't afford to eat there, how could poor college kids?
It is the most expensive mexican place!
PS I love the pizza at John's. I also love the pizza at Two Boots in the East Village. If you like spicy food you are in for a treat. (I ADORE PIZZA. It is my favorite food but I can't eat it anymore. It goes right to my belly)

Pizza is also my favorite food. If you want really good pizza, and it must be John's, at least go to the one in the W. Village. It's a little better than the theater district one.

If you feel like Two Boots but don't want to sit and eat a pie, go to the one in the W. Village and get slices-that is if you want the spicy kind.

For slices, my favorite is Ben's in Soho. For sitting down with whole pies, I like Arturo's on Houston.
