I have a question - can we really consider people like Audrey Hepburn and Deborah Kerr for this catagory when their singing was completely dubbed by someone else? Great as these ladies were, it is not completely THEIR performance.

Would Audrey's performance of the song "Moon River" (Breakfast at Tiffany's) count for being on a top ten? Definitely one of my favorite song moments on screen.

As for the others:

*Glen Hansard: Once (ok, not a typical "musical" but it's still amazing)
*Johnny Depp: Sweeney Todd
*Tim Curry: Annie
*Judy Garland: Meet Me In St. Louis
*Susan Sarandon: Rocky Horror
*Mark Lester: Oliver!
*Ewan McGregor: Moulin Rouge!
*Jodi Benson: The Little Mermaid
*Gene Kelly: Singin In the Rain
*Danny Elfman: The Nightmare Before Christmas

Wow. Susan Sarandon merits a mention for "Rocky Horror", but Tim Curry gets his for..."Annie"? For real? RE: Top Ten

No criticism intended, honestly. But while I enjoyed Tim in "Annie", I thought his performance in "Rocky Horror" was truly phenomenal.

Oh I love both his performances. I just grew up watching (and loving) his Rooster more so then his sweet transvestite! But I could be really off kilter and add his performance as John Silver from Muppet Treasure Island into the mix; but that seems to be a bit off base... RE: Top Ten

Okay, my top 10, in no particular order:

Joel Grey, Cabaret
Liza Minnelli, Cabaret
Judy Garland, Meet Me In St. Louis/Wizard of Oz
Yul Brynner, The King and I
Shirley Jones, Oklahoma!/Carousel/the Music Man
Gordon McRae, Carousel (in particular)/Oklahoma!
Julie Andrews, the Sound of Music/Mary Poppins
Christopher Plummer, The Sound of Music
Robert Preston, The Music Man

And to Krissy, who said:
Marni Nixon My Fair Lady, The King and I, West Side Story Rita Moreno in West Side Story, too, but I'm not sure who her singing voice was.

Rita Moreno sang her own role in West Side Story. She was in the West End production of Sunset Boulevard and does shows at Feinstein's among other venues.

Rita Moreno didn't do all of her own singing in WEST SIDE STORY. She sings "America" obviously, but it is someone named Betty Wand doing "A Boy Like That."

OK Madcap, I'll be the first to defend the choice of Bonham Carter being on MY list. I agree that her singing left a lot to be desired, but she did give it an effort. I put her on my list because on each viewing of the film (I'm at 5 now), I find some new nuance to her ACTING performance that I missed before. I feel that she entirely inhabited the role and made it completely her own. I stand by my assertion that it's one of the greatest acting performances in movie musical history. I understand those who disagree, as I myself sometimes wonder what it would have been like if an actual singer had been cast for this role. I guess we'll never know...

...her facial expression didn't change. for the entire movie. She didn't convey at ALL the fact that Mrs. Lovett is MADLY in love with Sweeney Todd and, in fact orchestrated the entire plot so that maybe one day she could get him to look at her like he loved her. hbc did not in any way convey that. if you've ever been truly in love, you know the lengths that you would go to just to have whomever it is look at you the way you feel for them inside. i didn't feel anything for hbc in the movie. patti lupone (only looking at acting) made you fall in love with a woman who chops people up and makes them into meatpies!!!! THAT is acting.
