My definition: A teapot is the vessel - often porcelain - into which one pours hot water to steep tea (preferably loose tea). You can then bring the teapot to the table to serve your guests. A tea kettle is made of metal (mine's copper), and is put on the stove to boil water.

A kettle is generally metal and is what you boil the water in for making tea. A tea pot is what the tea is steeped in. You put in the leaf and boiling water and let it sit in the pot for a while, and then you have tea! It's made of china, most often.
