"Viva Laughlin"?#1

Despite its less-than-stellar review in the NY Times this morning (I am being generous), who is planning on watching tonight?!?

No, the NY Times said that CopRock was better.

It's a watered-down version of the great BBC show "Viva Blackpool"

That show was good, this one (like the American "Coupling") will suck.

how dare you, billy! didn't you see that fenfenla'anatullahchurch has decreed it terrible? he doesn't even need to watch it to be able to determine it's worthlessness and by ignoring his decree you invite death to your door you foolish infidel!

I watched the first episode of Viva Blackpool and was bored silly. I had no reason to believe Viva Laughlin would be any better.

All I remember about CopRock is a scene where a female drug addict just sold her baby and sings a ballad on a park bench. It was actually quite good.

Love Kathleen Wilhoite in that scene...and love the song "Sandman".

Written by Randy Newman, who wrote many of Cop Rock's numbers.

It was originally written for his Opera "Faust".

Taz, check out the "Baby Merchant" clip...that's what most of the numbers were like...what a plot!

The pilot was the best...cheesy, bad, and wonderful.

It was the "Carrie, the Musical" of television.

Until tonite! 'viva laughlin'?

First off, thanks so much for pointing me to youtube and suggesting Baby Merchant.

Secondly, I mean, there simply are no words to describe that. How has this not become a absolute cult classic with episodic midnight screenings is beyond me.

If Viva Laughlin is even one third as bad/brilliant as that I am going to have a new favorite show.

I watched every episode of Cop Rock. Onorati's "You Can't Keep a Good Man Down" was homoerotic heaven.

And the final episode, when a fat soprano descends from above the stage, well, that was some fanfriggintastic stuff.

I bet if you were to watch these shows over and over you would become innured to their awfulness. I can see myself saying (after maybe the 10th viewing):
"how was this not a hit? It's so fresh and innovative".

Sort of like the way a flop's cast album becomes a fan favorite.

And:
It won 2 Emmys!
