I know that Broadway shows are really not allowed to be taped, so my question is why was it allowed with Legally Blonde? Are they going to do it with any other shows? I really like the idea I would love to see it done with Rent or SPring awakening.

Gosh, was Light in the Piazza on PBS legal? I don't remember.

It was an agreement between the producers and MTV, so yes, that's legal. As for other shows, I don't know. I do know that yesterday I saw SEVERAL people respond something along the lines of "I'm like DVRing it now! Why would I PAY to see it?" when a girl in fromt of the Palace tried to give them a flyer about the show. So me thinks it might backfire on them.

I'm saying that I'm suprised that they allowed them to tape and air the show with the show still being open on broadway.

Light in the Piazza was taped when the show was still on Broadway.

Oh and they also filmed the Sweeney Todd concert with George Hearn and Patti Lupone. That should be added to the list.

its the ultimate advert for the show

People will flock to see the show now and especially if the show tours (which the producers would have thought about)

You guys remember that one time some dude illegally video taped "Into the Woods" and somehow broadcasted it on PBS? I'm still apalled about that.

Were the other shows (save for TLITP) aired before they closed on Broadway. I know Passion and Sweeney had already closed (Sweeney was on tour). What about Sunday and Into the Woods?

And managed to put out press releases and ads saying they were going to do it without the producers ever catching wind of it.

Is Legally Blonde is the first show to air on American television while the actual show was still playing on Broadway? I know Victor/Victoria aired in Japan while the show was still playing. I'm not sure about Peter Pan. I'm still trying to figure out if the Mary Martin Peter Pan aired after closing or if it aired while the show was still open. Updated On: 10/14/07 at 08:10 PM

LITP was definitely still playing when they aired it on PBS. Granted it did close a little bit after, but still.

Many people have talked about how it is legal because it has the producers' consent, but that is not the case. The producers have no control over that. While it would be illegal if the producers did not consent. Even though the producers did consent, the power lies with AEA. It says in their contract that a show cannot be taped in any way, unless a special exception is made. In this case, if AEA hadn't given consent, the whole project would have been shot down months ago.

Yeah, Legally Blonde is definitely NOT the first show to be broadcast while it is still running.

As far as I know, however, it IS the first to be broadcast while running on a commercial network (i.e. not PBS or BBC)

Yeah, like that's going to happen. Who are you to call someone stupid?

I believe that's reason for the mods to delete that post, at least.

I think Piazza aired on PBS about 2 & 1/2 weeks before the show closed on Broadway...
