South Pacific, Hollywood Bowl, Aug. 8 2007

I saw "South Pacific" with Brian Stokes Mitchell and Reba McEntire at the Hollywood Bowl tonight....I didn't see the Carnegie performance (so I don't have anyone to compare this cast to), and this was my first time watching South Pacific, so what a treat!

The overall impression was that this was such a great show, with a fabulous cast. The staging was brilliant, with a fun detail with the conductor wearing a hawaiian shirt too :) I finally got to see Brian Stokes perform live! I melted when he sang "Some Enchanted Evening"....could listen to it all night! He was the ultimate French gentleman as Emile. Reba did a great job, her acting was pitch perfect as the "hick from the stick"....although I thought her voice was a bit weak during some of her songs, but she was charming and witty as Nellie. Armelie McQueen as Bloody Mary was fabulous; she was funny and persuasive, her presence literally filled the stage. Aaron Lazar's soaring tenor just personifies someone in love! Seeing Aaron again without his shirt (a la Fabrizio in "Piazza") was nostalgic :)

I heard Reba and Aaron flub a few lines, but I doubt anyone noticed

The ensemble was amazing, loved the choreography and staging; I almost forgot I wasn't watching a fully staged show. Fabulous evening! Saturday evening is almost sold out, but I am sure there are tickets left for Sunday.
