First Tomatoes of the Season#1
Posted: 8/3/07 at 12:21pm
As many of you know, I'm Italian and pride myself on growing sensational tomatoes each year. Well, I just got finished weeding te vegetable patch and found several ripe tomatoes. Of course I couldn't wait to sample then and I'm proud to say that they are juicy and sweet. The plants can be as green and bushy as possible, but you never know how good a tomato is until you try it.

Now, tonight's salad will include tomatoes and peppers from the gardem

Molto bene!

Enjoy!

My tomatoes have been gone for a couple of months now - but it was a great season.

I got mine last night from my stepdad's garden. They look fantastic. I think I will also have a salad tonight. You're place or mine, Dolly?

Despite the draught, it has been a good year for tomatoes. Unbelievable for basil. My basil leaves are as big as my hand!

As usual, all my tomatoes are ripening pretty much at the same time. But it has been a good season for them - very sweet and not too "seedy." I also have a bumper crop of Italian peppers and cucumbers.

I'm weird. I love tomato sauce, tomato juice,tomato soup,gazpacho.

I don't like tomatoes themselves. Its a texture thing.

I am right there with you, wexy, though if a tomato is just ripe and still firm I can eat it on a sandwich.

Congrats on the tomatoes Dolly!

Definitely mine. I dine out on the back deck, surrounded by tons os sweet alyssum that become very fragrant when the day cools off. I have a nice bottle of San Pellegrino chilling and some Mozart in the background.

You are more than welcome!

I don't so much put tomatoes on my sanwhich, my tomatoes are my sandwhich. I love sliced tomato, Vadallia onion, mayo and salt and pepper on toast! My favorite sandwhich. I also love tomato salad (tomatoes, onion, garlic, basil, extra virgin olive oil); and, creamed tomatoes and bacon on toast. The best thing about summer is tomatoes!

I love fresh garden salads, with ingredients that just came from a garden, which are rare nowadays unless you grow them yourself.

*sigh*

I'm stuck with the overpriced salads in a bag from the supermarket. I don't think the atmosphere in my apartment would help nurture the growth of very healthy vegetables.

Foster, haven't you checked out the Green Market on Union Square? It's all fresh fruit and vegetables and certainly worth investigating.
