The Phoebe Snow Love Thread#1
Posted: 7/18/07 at 12:08pm
I just wanted to spread a little Phoebe love. She recently lost her beloved daughter, Valerie, who was the light of her life. I was happy to see that she has been out and about and I hope she is doing well.
We love you Phoebe. Hang in there and stay strong.
Now for those who may not be familiar, ENJOY!
Classic Phoebe
PEACE.

What happened to her daughter? I love "Harpo's Blues" and, of course, "Poetry Man".

Phoebe's daughter was born with severe birth defects and Phoebe cared for her until she passed away recently. Her daughter always came first in her life and was the reason she would not tour and only made sporadic recordings through the years. I suspect it is also the reason she jumped on that very lucrative jingle train. (Celebrate the moments of your life!)
A lot of her songs are about her connection with Valerie, although they might seem like simple love songs) and when she sings Neverland from Peter Pan, it makes me cry every time.

What a brave and wonderful person she is.
PEACE.

Now that you write that, I completely remember her daughter being born and her commitment to keeping her out of an institution. I've loved her since the 70s. Her voice is always so identifiable on those commercials.

I'm her Poetry Man, I make things alright.

Love her.

I think her Teach Me Tonight is definitive. Her build from innocent little girl to fully satisfied woman is brilliant and never been matched.
PEACE.

Amen, her "Teach Me Tonight" is ravishing, a full-length play in and of itself. I first listened to that album in the summer of 1980, and "Teach Me..." was a kind of signature tune fo that era for me. That sultry prelude, and her way into the song's revelations are breathtaking. Now when I hear it, I'm overwhelmed with nostalgia and in awe of her nuanced reading of the song. It's a case of finding even more in the interpretation.

I'm sorry to hear about her daughter. I've been a fan since I was a kid and first heard Poetry Man. She did a duet with Linda Ronstadt on SNL in the late 70s, the song was "The Shoop Shoop Song" and it was fabulous. I didn't know, at the time, what a big voice she had. I will always remember watching those two women with goose bumps.

Here is a link to the official PS site. On the front page is Phoeobe's eulogy for Valerie. It is a beautiful tribute and choked me up to no end.
Rest in Peace Valerie
