I'm really only upset about 3 awards
Best Book (Wanted Gardens)
Best Choreography (Wanted Poppins/Blonde,maybe even Curtains)
Best Leading Actor in a Musical

Spring Awakening is in no way perfect. That is what makes it so great. Despite its lack of Choreography and less than inspiring book, it is still rather enjoyable. Award Spring for what it does well. MUSIC!!! That alone, I think makes it Best Musical. Now, everyone will expect the show to be everything it is not. Does anyone understand me, and maybe want to take a shot at explaining my point better?

And actor. I just don't get. DHP was fun, but not deep. I feel like anyone could have pulled it off. The part is funny, the lines are good. It didnt take "Best Actor" quality to portray his character. Award Curtains with "Best Character". Look at how much effort Raul put into "Being Alive" tonight, and multiply that by 2 for each performance at the Barrymore, and then x8 for the number of shows he does per week. That is best actor quality.

Back on track. What outcomes piss you off / baffle you the most?

I was thoroughly pissed when DHP won. It ruined my night. I've never been moved the way Esparza moved me during Company.

Curtains not getting Best Choreography and Grey Gardens not getting best book. I don't like Spring Awakening at all, and I wish something else had been strong enough to beat it for Best Musical, but I'm glad it's doing well if only for the effort put in by the cast and creative team.

MyLife- you pinpointed every single problem I had. SA for book... what? I think their book is awful. Love the music.

I was ticked off about:

Spring Awakening winning choreography (I wanted Curtains), orchestrations (I wanted Lovemusik), score (GG), book (GG), Musical (GG), and Directing (GG).

I would've liked to see Raul win.

Other than that, I'm good.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

I'm disappointed Anna Louizos didn't win!
Other than that, I'm pretty satisfied with the results.

Amongst many of the other awards it did not deserve, SA did not have the best score, and it's even more of a travesty that lyrics were included in that (SA has some of the worst lyrics that I've ever heard.)

Raul Esparza deserved to win Best Actor in a Musical, and I would have preferred 110 in the Shade winning over Company.

Would've liked to see Martha Plimpton win and thought GG deserved Best Book. Actually, I thought SA was the least deserving of the nominees.

You thought Spring Awakening's book was less deserving than Legally Blonde's? Wow.
I wouldn't have minded Curtains winning for Best Book though.

My life those were my problems as well plus featured actress in a play. I thought Plimpton was better but I wasnt terribly upset. Those were the 4 awards i got wrong the whole night.

Mary Poppins or Curtains not winning Best Choreography
Grey Gardens not winning best book of a musical and best musical (but i knew that was gonna happen)
Raul Esparza not wnining for Company (now, i do not think raul esparza is the most amazing performer, but he def was my favorite of all the other guys....and if he didn't win, i would have picked Gavin Lee, not DHP)

Even though Spring Awakening did win so many awards (some that i'll admit were not as deserving) but i really wanted Jonathan Groff to win!

My biggest disappointment was Raul Esparza not winning Best Actor in a Musical. Now, I haven't either "Company" or "Curtains" yet, (August family trip to NYC coming up!), but based on the excerpts of the show I've seen & the cast recording, Raul has done an incredible job as Robert & has really poured every fibre of his being into the role. I'm very disappointed that he didn't win it.

Also, I don't know a whole lot about "Spring Awakening", but I was surprised at how many awards it won. I didn't necessarily think it was a bad show, but it just didn't appeal to my tastes. And looking at the posts on the boards right now, I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in these opinions.

I really enjoyed Curtains book. It should have been given recognition for at least being creative and different.

Curtains - liked the book, eh on the music
Spring - liked the music, eh on the book.

BDavis - that's the perfect way to put it. Raul was moving, not just great. He evoked feeling in a show that I think is boring. The revival was great, the direction, idea, HIM. Glad that one for sure. My heart skipped a few beats when Raul lost. I never thought I could feel that bad for someone I do not even now.

I was beginning to like Spring, but this night just makes me want to hate it.

And Ashley, thank you. I was sitting with my dad, mom, and sister watchign the Tony's, fighting with them. My parents didn't see anything, ad were telling me SA deserved book because they heard it was great. I hate when people think just because a show is good, it deserves everything. I saw Spring with my sister Wednesday (I rushed for her because she wnated to see it even though I told myself I would not ever go again). She too was happy every time SA won something because since she liekd the music she thought everything was great. Really, the book is great, and the hsow may even be better if it was nonexistent. This is why I love BWW. I don't go on too often, but it is the perfect place to vent and have people understand me even if they don't agree. Thanks all!

That's the thing, Half-Mask. Some people think Spring Awakening is brilliant or at least a decent show. Others think it's crap and don't allow other people to like it. It really isn't for all tastes and people, but some people can't possibly let others like it.

Is Spring Awakening flawed? Yes.
Is Grey Gardens flawed? YES.
No show was perfect this year. Therefore, there was no travesty in that category.

Just 1: Grey Gardens not getting best book.

Everything else was inline with what I expected.

I think Christine Ebersole and David Hyde Pierce were huge favorites in my book. No one else close. I would have liked to see GG get best musical, but I thought SA would get it because GG is just too small.

I'm totally with WondeyWiz.

I'm the pissiest about Choreography, book, and Orchestrations. It's gonna take me a while to get over those three. I can't Grey Gardens didn't win any major awards for the production. Ugh.

Only one: Raul. Nothing against DHP at all, but it just felt like it should be Raul's year.

Luckily for us he is very talented and will be around for a long time. He'll have other opportunities, and will eventually get his due.

Otherwise, I was generally quite pleased with the awards and have no other gripes. Particularly pleased with Julie White, Jennifer Ehle, and Bill T. Jones getting recognized.

My absolute biggest disappointment/what pissed me off the most...

SA FOR ORCHESTRATIONS????? WTF???

Tunick was soo robbed (Lovemusik). Yeah, way to go Shiek, knew when to have guitars play and when to have drums play... (okay, I know there were violins, but just...so not comparable to Tunick's beautiful orchestrations and very well-picked particular instruments for Lovemusik. Ulgh!

I too was pissed at book, but I didn't want Grey Gardens to get it, I wanted Curtains to get it! I thought maybe GG and SA would take votes away from each other...I *guess* I would pick GG over SA, but ulgh!

And finally, SA for choreography. I was hoping for Curtains, predicted Mary Poppins, would have been fine with either...
