Circuit City is offering the soft-cover version of the recently released 192-page DREAMGIRLS: The Movie Musical book as part of their DREAMGIRLS Gift Set with the 2-disc Showstopper DVD Edition only. It's not 'free'.
The single-disc version of the DREAMGIRLS DVD comes with a free 6-track music CD sampler, featuring music by Amerie, Beyonce' and Kelly Rowland. This CD sampler isn't offered with the 2-disc Showstopper Edition of the DVD.
Wal-Mart is ONLY offering the 7-track of Club Remixes of songs from DREAMGIRLS with the single-disc version of the DREAMGIRLS DVD (either the full-screen or widescreen versions). This CD is not offered with the 2-disc Showstopper Edition of the DVD, which doesn't have any exclusive offerings.
That sucks. You would think that those consumers (namely myself) who shell out the extra money for the 2 Disc edition should get the 7 track remix CD as well.
I guess I will just have to start looking for the CD on Ebay.
Now with circut city...when they released the Rent dvd, they promised a free calander. Not a single store recieved them. I hope this isn't the case with Dreamgirls.
"I never had theatre producers run after me. Some people want to make more Broadway shows out of movies. But Elliot and I aren't going to do Batman: The Musical." - Julie Taymor 1999
For Christmas 2007, an Extended Version DVD is being released. It won't be another Special Edition DVD of the theatrical version of the film, which is coming out this Tuesday May 1, 2007. It most likely will be the film with simply those extended musical numbers added back to the film. Nothing more; nothing less. Bill did state that this Extended Version DVD will include the "Effie, Sing My Song" sequence, replacing the current spoken-dialogue version seen in the theatrical version of the film. This "Effie, Sing My Song" sequence is included on the May 1, 2007 DVD on the bonus material/special features section.
Since Bill Condon didn't have time to record an audio commentary for this May 1, 2007 DVD release, it is expected he will be doing one for the Christmas 2007 release of the Extended Version DVD, which will not be containing any of the extras this May 1, 2007 DVD release will have.
Seems everyone is offering exclusives with the DREAMGIRLS DVD. BestBuy is offering a music download card.
I believe this Target Deluxe Edition is simply the 2-disc Showstopper Edition with a bonus DVD, which includes an interview with Jennifer Hudson, as well as 8 mini-featurettes (and more!).
It sure is going to be tough deciding where to get this damn DVD.
The least obvious one is the Circuit City DREAMGIRLS Gift Set, which comes with the soft-cover version of that DREAMGIRLS: The Movie Musical book for an extra charge. You can buy that same book for alot less seperately, so this Gift Set is more of a rip-off, bargain-wise.
The one to choose seems to be the Target offering. BestBuy, Wal-Mart and single-disc Circuit City offering doesn't attract me at all. Plus, I'm also buying the Blu-Ray disc version for my upcoming Sony Blu-Ray disc player when it's released in a few months.
Also K-Mart is offering a free Dreamgirls make-up bag with a purchase of what looks like the single disc version (it doesn't say). I don't know if it also applies to the 2-disc version.
This has to be the dumbest thing I have ever seen. I don't ever remember people doing so many different things for the same dvd.

No, it's dumb how hard it is to decide where I should buy my dvd.

It's not a question of variety, it's a question of ethics.
The film has many fans and they all want these items being offered by every one of these stores. It's impossible to purchase every single DVD release of DREAMGIRLS in order to have these items.
Usually, BestBuy offers a bonus DVD, so I'm surprised they are not doing this with the DREAMGIRLS release. I guess it's Target this Tuesday since they're the only ones offering what seems to be a bonus DVD. I could care less for those music CDs, especially that Club Remix CD. Ugh!
The only store in my town is wal-mart - so thats where I'll get mine.
I want the 2 disc dvd - so no bonus products for me.

"Celebrating a birthday this week: Rene Descartes is 412! Do you know who he is? Then why are you watching this show? You could probably get into college and even get one of those job things. As for the rest of us; Amanda Bynes is 22! Yay!" -E!'s "The Soup"
I read a dvd review that said the feature length documentary is so good that you dont miss the absence of an audio commentary.

A hardcover version of the book is offered on Amazon by the STrand Bookstore for $15 (half). That means if you're in NY, you can just go down there and get it. The one offered as part of the "Gift set" at Circuit City, probably is the paperback version which you can get on Amazon for 9 bucks.
And there are no commentaries so that when the extended edition is released for christmas, people will buy it. I will. I thought it was a HUGE mistake not including the "effie sing my song" bit in the film.
As I stated above, the reason this May 1, 2007 release of the theatrical version of DREAMGIRLS on DVD does not contain an audio commentary by Bill Condon is because he wasn't able to do one due to scheduling conflicts. The DVD went into production several months ago. It's expected that Bill will do one for the Expanded Version DVD which is coming out for Christmas 2007.
Though "Effie, Sing My Song" was not inserted back into the film (but will be for the Expanded Version DVD), it does appear on the bonus material/special features section of the upcoming May 1, 2007 DVD release...so we all WILL be able to see it.
Target, it is! What I hate, is that movie companies are coming out with single and 2-disk versions of movies, with the 2-disk being expensive. I wish they would do what they used to do and just have one dvd with two disks, at a reasonable price. Greedy, that is all it is!
"They're eating her and then they're going to eat me. OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!" -Troll 2
Um, the single (1) disc only contains the film, 12 deleted scenes and Beyonce's "Listen" video. That's it.
The 2-disc Showstopper Edition contains this same disc (as it's disc 1) PLUS a 2nd disc with tons (and I mean TONS) of extras -- including an almost 2 HOUR long documentary, Anika Noni Rose and Beyonce's screen tests, and much, much more!
The higher cost is merited. If you want to miss out on all the goodies contained on the 2-disc Showstopper Edition, then just buy the single-disc and moan when others tell you what you're missing.
