Avenue Q rights#1

Who holds them and would any show show, not just Avenue Q, grant the right while a show is still running?

I don't know who holds the right to Q, but it's highly unlikely any new musical playing on Broadway would grant you the rights to the show.

I once saw a website for a theatre, and they had a list of shows they wanted to do. They said they contacted the people who hold the rights to Avenue Q, and said that the rights will not availible for another 12 years or so.

What the puck?!

The reason I ask is,the theater i work with is about to annouce it's summer season and I'm close to most everyone on the stuff but they will not say what the musical is because it could fall through but they don't think it will. Well I did some snooping and found out the plan is Avenue Q.

It's doubtful, but I do know that sometimes they grant the rights to use portions of the score, and you can sort of do a concert version....but that's a really really really rare thing.

Oh in concert sure. If you do five or so selections, yeah. But if you do a full production of it, it's illegal.

The producers of AVENUE Q would absolutely never grant rights for a regional production when there hasn't even been a tour yet.

The only time I have ever heard of a current non-revival show running on Broadway that gave regional rights was Les Miz and that still is only for high school productions

I'm not doubting you... but it does seem like it's an Old Globe production. It says something like they're "proud to produce the west coast premeire" ... I dunno

San Diego is the first stop of the tour. La Jolla playhouse did something like this years back with the first Rent tour.

"San Diego is the first stop of the tour. La Jolla playhouse did something like this years back with the first Rent tour."

Yes and no. La Jolla launched the 2nd National Tour of RENT, not the 1st. The 1st National tour premiered inj Boston first and then sat down in Chicago for about five motnhs before it toured.

Actually you are wrong. The Old Globe production of Avenue Q is not a tour (if it is, it has not been announced as one) This production is being rehearsed in San Diego at the Old Globe.

But it IS a remounting of the Broadway version - using the same direction, sets, costumes, puppet design, etc. They didn't give Old Globe the rights to do their own version of the show.

you're wrong, the Old Globe production is ABSOLUTELY launching the tour. This tour may not be the standard national tour as the show can be a difficult sell in certain markets in the country, I would not be srprised if the tour doesn't appear at other reputable regional houses accross the country.
