Really Good Speller in Spelling Bee

When my school went to go see Spelling Bee, a girl who had placed in the top 5 in the National Spelling Bee on ESPN for 3 years in a row went up on stage and just wouldn't spell words wrong. Did anyone see this performance or see a performance like it?

Not quite...I was at that performance last year where a girl misspelled COW.

I went to one in San Francisco where this 9 year old boy got some word wrong and he was the last one on stage, so they needed to get rid of him. I don't think ANYONE could have gotten his next word right

no, I wasn't there for this one, unfortunately. But I just heard from a friend who saw the show a few days ago that there was a guy who also refused to get anything wrong. When they finally resorted to making up a word, he spelled that correctly too.

The same thing happened at my performance... I think Panch and Peretti were ready for him to be sent back to his seat.. So, He got a word right, but Panch rang the bell! :)

i was at the first philadelphia performance where the final speller knew in advance that he would be spelling (he's slightly famous....)....he got the "fake" word wrong and the word after that wrong....they kept telling him to stay right there until they'd get him off....

Why would they give him another word if he already got it wrong? Unless of course they were milking it for applause and laughs (which I've seen them do).

I think with Spelling Bee, the made-up words could go either way. They pull 'em out when people have spelled their way correctly through the real words, then they can either use the made-up words to get rid of someone who just is that good at spelling, or they can say "yeah, you spelled it right!" to keep them on for laughs or whatever. That's the impression I've got from aaaaall the threads I've read on BWW anyway. ^_^

I agree with Weez here. Having seen the show several times, I've witnessed the final speller spell "caterjunes" a few different ways, and each time Panch and Peretti act surprised and say they spelled it correctly. It's all up to the cast as to how long a contestant (especially the last speller eliminated) stays on stage.
