So I was reading a Sweeney Blog (which was very interesting) and I came across a reply that said how There will be a bunch of kids wearin sweeney shirts from hot topic....And on the bus today I realized how much I was gonna be bugged over it.......It's SO important to me (Sweeney Todd) and to have kids wearing shirts like theyre huge fans pisses me off.....I saw the REVIVAL Dammit I a Todd Head.......Anyone agree or think i 'm crazy???
You're a bit mad. Don't worry, we know you're hardcore, unlike those posers. Wow, I'm reminded of middle school. :)
I'll have to check out such shirts at the mall soon.

how funny, i mentioned the same thing in my blog a few weeks ago, lol. its true though, im not a hardcore sweeney fan or anything, but i did enjoy the 1982 dvd version, and im very much looking forward to the movie. not looking forward to all the kids who are gonna be obsessing over it just because of mr. depp
Well if you bought one of the shirts from the Revival... I doubt they will be selling those at Hot Topic... so you can still prove you saw the Revival and were a fan before the movie.
its great that people like Sweeney regardless .... considering there have been movies, other past musicals, cds, i mean ... to say you corner the market on it cause of the revival is a bit bizzare
i would think that the movie imagery for both Sweeney and Hairspray will be atleast a little bit different from the musical. and the merchandise will different too.
Just what we need. MORE emo kids who think they're hardcore because they idolize everything Tim Burton/Johnny Depp wearing Hot Topic creations.
I don't WANT to live in what they call "a certain way." In the first place I'd be no good at it and besides that I don't want to be identified with any one class of people. I want to live every whichway, among all kinds---and know them---and understand them---and love them---THAT's what I want! - Philip Barry (Holiday)

You know, I hear people mention this about all sorts of stuff when it gets turned into a feature film. I'm brand new to posting here, so maybe I should bite my tongue, but this sort of grates on me.
What exactly is the problem with kids supporting this material, I wonder? Are you duty-bound to invite everyone in a Sweeney shirt over to your house for cocktails? Doesn't anyone just like something because they like it? Does it only count if you get to feel elite? I pretty much like Sweeney Todd because I have a good time at the show, and find it thought provoking, and enjoy the music. I can't say it has anything to do with how exclusively cool I feel, nor can I imagine being suddenly turned off when, horrors, other people start to appreciate it too.
It seems awfully ironic that people assert that the kids in Hot Topic shirts won't be "real fans", but yet those who consider themselves "real fans" hinge so much on it being exclusive.
Maybe you can like it even if you don't feel super-duper extra-special smart in front of your music teacher anymore?
This thread is both SAD and SCAREY at the same time, really who cares if people wear T shirts from shows and have only seen the movie..
How old are you, sad very sad..
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.
Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.
This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more.

AElizabeth, as was shown with the release of the Rent movie, it's not just about new/young fans. Seeing something you love and had a serious emotional response and attachment to being reduced to the latest fad where every kid at the mall is claiming to be "OMG da BIGGEST RENTHEAD EVRA!" because they saw the movie is frustrating. Mainly because a large percentage of them are willfully ignorant and have this narcissistic refusal to acknowledge that the show (and other fans) ever existed before they discovered it. I'm not saying you have to see the show 10 times onstage before you can call yourself a fan of the movie, but don't get all pissy with me because I tell you you're wrong, because I *do* know better, and no, Benny did not have AIDS. (/rant)
With all the emo-scene kids already worshipping Tim Burton/Johnny Depp, I can only imagine Sweeney get the same kind of response. Yes, it supports the show, but I would rather be amongst 10 knowledgable, dedicated fans than 100 teenybopper fans that will drop it completely when the next movie craze comes along.

This happens all the time really. Every time an "underground" band gets famous, all the old fans have to deal with annoying 14 year olds. It happened with Rent, in a way. And it is annoying. Then you get all the people up on their high horse going "Well, atleast such and such is reaching a wider audience. Don't you want it to be successful?? blah blah blah" It's all very trite, really.
But look at it this way... at least when you see all the kids wearing those shirts, you can casually say, "So... what did you think of Michael Cerveris as Sweeney Todd?" and when they go, "LOL! Who??? OH! YOU MEAN JOHNNY DEPP!" you can scoff and say, "No, you ignorant cretin, I mean the brilliant and talented man who was Sweeney Todd in the revial cast on Broadway. What? Didn't know it was a Broadway play that's been around some odd thirty years? AND YOU'RE WEARING THE SHIRT??? POSER!"
and you'll feel good. Because you will have expressed your superiority.
and then there's all the sarcastic comments you can make on message boards... oh so many sarcastic comments. those never get old!
That is just it, the "fad kids" will drop it completely eventually. If it is really imporant to you it should not matter what anyone else does, liking it or hating it.
Yes, the fans can be annoying, but the idea that "I know better since I have been into it longer and am more 'real'" is also trite. Just like the people who call those who like the Sweeney revival "posers" who missed the original.
It should be the material and your response to it that matters, it is the idea that it is dependent upon the reaction of others, be they 10 or 10,000 that is the most irritating.
iridescent_bomb, don't get me started on the kids that wear Ramones t-shirts and when I ask about their favorite song, reply "That Hey Ho song." If you're going to buy the t-shirt, know what the hell you're talking about first.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. As with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Corpse Bride, Sweeney merch will probably be all over the store for the few months leading up to the release of the movie. There will be shirts and earrings shaped like razors and pins for the scene kids to put all over their messenger bags, and it'll be annoying. But the craze will quickly fizzle out, as it always does, and everyone will go on with their lives.
And hopefully a few new Sondheim fans will be left behind.
It may be hard for us to accept that our little babies are growing up and going out into the world where they might be abused, but that's life.
And before you start feeling too elitist over your status as a "Todd Head" I would remind you that there are hundreds of people on this board who have been fans of the musical for nearly 30 years and who look at you -- with your rant and self-applied "Todd Head" label -- the same way you look at the future t-shirt wearers.
Perhaps the idea of the movie going global and appealing to mainstream teens bothers you because you realize deep down that you're a bit of a fanboy yourself.
