Name 10 of your favorite Broadway shows

1. Les Miserables
2. Sweeney Todd
3. Sunday in the Park With George
4. Cabaret
5. Assassins
6. Ragtime
7. Urinetown
8. Avenue Q
9. The Light in the Piazza
10. Into the Woods

Have you ever seen these shows live? And if so, where?

Les Miz--Broadway, London, and twice on tour (once in Wichita, once in Kansas City)
Cabaret--on tour in Wichita
Urinetown--Broadway and at my old high school

I have videos of the rest. Unfortunately, we don't get a lot of thought-provoking theatre in the heart of Kansas.

What's your favorite song from play 2?
"Epiphany," "A Little Priest," or "Johanna (Reprise)"

Who's your favorite character from play 4?
Sally Bowles, of course!

What's your favorite scene from play 5?
So hard to choose! Probably "The Ballad of Czolgosz"

What's your favorite lyric from play 8?
"I'm kinda pretty and pretty damn smart/I like romantic things like music and art/And as you know I have a gigantic heart/So why don't I have a boyfriend?/F*ck!/It sucks to be me"

From play 10, which character are you most like?
Little Red Ridinghood...probably why I was cast as her re: BROADWAY Survey

Can you quote every line from play 1?
I've been able to sing the entire show since I was 10 years old. I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

How many times have you seen play 3?
I've never seen it live, unfortunately, but God only knows how many times I've watched the DVD

If you could be anyone from play 6, who would it be? Why?
Either Mother or Emma Goldman. Both fit very well in my vocal range. Mother because it would be stepping outside the box of roles I usually play. Emma Goldman because she's EXACTLY the type of character I usually play.

What's your favorite song from play 7?
"Don't Be the Bunny"

What's your favorite quote from play 9?
"No no no, it must be mine to ask it!" So adorable and sweet re: BROADWAY Survey

Out of all these plays, which one is your absolute favorite?
Les Miserables

Who's the best Broadway actor?
Well, it's apples and oranges. I'm particularly fond of anything Michael Cerveris does. Norbert Leo Butz, Alan Cumming, and Brent Carver are always right on for me as well. And Anthony Warlow is my favorite ever, even if he hasn't been on Broadway per se.

Who's the best Broadway actress?
Patti LuPone, Donna Murphy, Joanna Gleason, and Audra McDonald are some of the names that come to mind first. Sutton Foster and Sherie Rene Scott are pretty great as well.

What's the best musical they turned into a movie?
The Music Man or 1776

Is there a musical you DON'T like?
There are MANY musicals I don't like.

If so, which one? Why?
Just to name the most "popular" ones: Wicked, Legally Blonde, The Wedding Singer, Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Grease, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Tarzan, Starlite Express...the list goes on and on. Basically I hate musicals that are based on spectacle instead of content and insist on pandering to the lowest common denomonator. I think people are smarter than the superficial crap currently being served up and that it does the audience and the creative team a diservice. We're artists--we deserve the opportunity to view art.

Do you think the movie versions are better, or the original Broadway plays?
I love filmed versions of the actual stage shows (otherwise I'd never see anything), but the original play is always preferable. Always.

This or That:

The Producers or RENT - RENT
Wicked or Chicago - Chicago
Fiddler on the Roof or Oklahoma! - Fiddler on the Roof
Thoroughly Modern Millie or 42nd Street - Millie, but that's not saying much
Hairspray or Grease - Hairspray

"Shut up! It's been 29 years!!!" --the incomparable Patti LuPone in her MUCH DESERVED Tony acceptance speech for Gypsy.

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."

Name 10 of your favorite musical shows

1. Disney’s On The Record
2. Spring Awakening
3. Avenue Q
4. The Phantom of the Opera
5. Wicked
6. Little Shop of Horrors
7. Legally Blonde
8. The Lion King
9. The Color Purple
10. The Little Mermaid

Have you ever seen these shows live? If so, where?

I have seen all of the shows live, if I were including other musicals that I have not seen live, “Rent,” “Tick, Tick…Boom!” “Sweeney Todd” “Chicago” and “Dreamgirls” would have definitely made the list.

What's your favorite song from play 2?
”Totally F*CKed.” Yes, that is the name of the song and, yes, it’s brilliant.

Who's your favorite character from play 4?
Eh, the show isn’t about the characters, it’s all about the music. But of course I will pick Carlotta, if only because she is the most interesting.

What's your favorite scene from play 5?
The conclusion of “Act 1” with “Defying Gravity” and one of the best mechanical stage effects. Ever.

What's your favorite lyric from play 7?
”What are we seein’? Is he gay…or European!?” From “There, Right There!”

From play 10, which character are you most like?
Arial, of course, though Sebastian is a close second.

Can you quote every line from play 1?
There are no lines of dialogue. But I can recite every lyric to every song, all 60 of them.

How many times have you seen play 3?
4 and counting.

If you could be anyone from play 6, who would it be? Why?
Well, I was the plant, so I suppose I would be the plant since everyone else dies because of the plant. Oh, spoiler!

What's your favorite song from play 7?
”Bend and Snap!” It’s the Pussycat Dolls on Broadway with girls thrusting all over the place.

What's your favorite quote from play 3?
-”I’d be careful doing anything with a monster, you might get fur in your teeth.”
-“If teeth are your problem, I could knock out a few for you.”

Out of all these plays, which one is your absolute favorite?
”On the Record.”

Who's the best Broadway actor?
From these shows? Andrew Samonsky, though Jonathan Groff is a close second.

Who's the best Broadway actress?
Kristen Chenoweth and Sierra Burggess.

What's the best musical they turned into a movie?
”Little Shop of Horrors”

Is there a musical you DON'T like?
On this list? No. In general, yes.

Do you think the movie versions are better, or the original Broadway plays?
The only ways movies ever improve on the original is if they become their own entity that can stand on its own without the musical, while still remaining true to the show’s essence.

"isn't it nice to know a lot?... and a little bit not"
"Let the moment go..
Don't forget it for a moment, though.
Just remembering you had an 'and,' when you're back to 'or,'
Makes the 'or' mean more than is did before.
Now I understand--
And it's time to leave the woods."
I could list many more.

From play 10, which character are you most like?
It's difficult to for me relate to the characters of Les Mis. The typical answer is Eponine, but I feel it's my only option. My favorite is Fantine.

Can you quote every line from play 1?
I've recently gotten into it. I know most of it.

How many times have you seen play 3?
only the PBS broadcast, but several times.

If you could be anyone from play 6, who would it be? Why?
I wouldn't say many of the characters are very happy, but I'd go with Joanne. I like how strong willed she is.

What's your favorite song from play 7?
If Momma Was Married. Rose's Turn. Small World

What's your favorite quote from play 9?
So many. Off the top of my head: "And a person should celebrate everything passing by", "Love's disgusting, love's insane, a humiliating business" "Think of how I adore you, think of how much you love me, if I were perfect for you, Wouldn't you tire of me?"

Out of all these plays, which one is your absolute favorite?
Sunday In The Park With George and Sweeney Todd.

Who's the best Broadway actor?
How should I know?

Who's the best Broadway actress?
nnnnnn

What's the best musical they turned into a movie?
the Cabaret film is quite good, though many changes. Evita, though IMO the movie is a completely separate entity from the show. and Chicago.

Is there a musical you DON'T like?
Yes. I tend not to like shows that don't make you think. I hate simple shows, unless the score is really appealing.

If so, which one? Why?
Someone bought me a ticket to Legally Blonde, so I went mainly just because it was free, and it was awful.

Do you think the movie versions are better, or the original Broadway plays?
the original

Wicked or Chicago - Chicago

Name 10 of your favorite Broadway shows

1. Spamalot
2. Les Miserables
3. Scarlet Pimpernel
4. Beauty and the Beast
5. Little Mermaid
6. Fiddler on the Roof
7. Phantom of the Opera
8. Hairspray
9. Sweeney Todd
10. Evita

Have you ever seen these shows live? If so, where?
Spamalot-- Twice, at National Theatre in D.C.
Les Miserables-- Twice, once at Wolf Trap and once at a high school (am about to see it again)
Beauty and the Beast-- Only once, at a high school.
Little Mermaid-- Once, on Broadway
Fiddler on the Roof-- At least fifteen times. I've seen it at many high schools, community theatres, and professional productions. It's the show that got me into musical theatre.
Evita-- Once, at the Warner Theatre in D.C. I believe Natalie Toro played Evita.

What's your favorite song from play 2?
"One Day More" and the whole "You at the barricades listen to this..." bit. I think the most beautiful ballad in the show is "Stars," which I guess is a little odd.

Who's your favorite character from play 4?
Monsieur D'Arque or LeFou! I do love my odd, creepy supporting roles.

What's your favorite scene from play 5?
King Triton's reprise of "The World Above" and the dance break in "One Step Closer." What, I'm a sucker. (A sucker who likes Norm Lewis, bright flashing lights, cute choreography, and Sean Palmer's pants.)

What's your favorite lyric from play 8?
"Good morning, Baltimore! There's the flasher who lives next door!" Either that or "You're the one who taught me how to twist and shout/Because you shout non-stop and you're so twisted, too!"

From play 10, which character are you most like?
I... guess Eva. Don't tell anyone.

Can you quote every line from play 1?
Almost all of them-- I have almost the entire film that it's based on memorized, and I do know all of the songs. I'm one of those sad specimens who's obsessed with Monty Python.

How many times have you seen play 3?
Sadly, none live. It was before my time. I do have the script, and I've seen the "Making Of" documentary and lots of clips from school productions online.

If you could be anyone from play 6, who would it be? Why?
Dude, Fruma Sarah. She pops out of the grave and shrieks at people. It's pretty great.

What's your favorite song from play 7?
"Notes!" By far! That or the counterpoint bit in "Down Once More."

What's your favorite quote from play 9?
This is technically a song lyric, but when Sweeney sings, "The history of the world, my love/Is those below serving those up above./How gratifying for once to know/That those above will serve those down below!" I always thought that was terribly clever...

Out of all these plays, which one is your absolute favorite?
Spamalot, simply because I love Monty Python. But in terms of music, Les Miserables.

Who's the best Broadway actor?
Don't know about the best, but I know who my favourites are. My favourite actor currently on Broadway is Norm Lewis. My overall favourite performers are Terrence Mann and Michael Ball (who HAS performed on Broadway, even though he's really more of a West End actor).

Who's the best Broadway actress?
Currently on Broadway? Hmmm, hard one. Not currently on Broadway, I'm quite fond of Susan Egan. She has a voice like melting butter.

What's the best musical they turned into a movie?
The best musical they've turned into a movie, or the best adaptation? I really like most movie musicals; I think my standards are low. My favourite is probably "Sweeney Todd," but I do have some serious problems with some aspects of the film... I also love "Hairspray."

Is there a musical you DON'T like?
Several, but not TOO many.

If so, which one? Why?
I don't like "Spring Awakening," though I've never seen it. I didn't think the songs I've heard were interesting, I borrowed the libretto from a friend and I felt the book was really odd, and then I'm not really too fond of profanity and talking about awkward subjects, so it's really not my cup of tea.

I'm also not at all fond of Starmites. I can't name a single thing I liked about that show except the song "Reach Right Down."

Do you think the movie versions are better, or the original Broadway plays?
In most cases, the real show is better. But in some cases, I think Phantom of the Opera works better as a film (They screwed up a lot of things in the film version, but in terms of sets and visuals, the show LOOKED so much better in film.) Also, I liked several performers in the Hairspray film better than the original Broadway performers, although I like the Original London cast the best.
This or That:

The Producers or RENT - The Producers.

Wicked or Chicago - I've never seen "Chicago," just a few songs from the film, and I didn't find them especially interesting. I don't really like Wicked, but I do like some of the songs, especially the opening number and "Thank Goodness." So I guess... neither?

Fiddler on the Roof or Oklahoma - DEFINITELY Fiddler.

Thoroughly Modern Millie or 42nd Street - Millie, thanks!

Hairspray or Grease - Hairspray, Hairspray, Hairspray!
