IMHO "Piazza" is the best show written in the last five years.

"Munk, why don't you just let people state their opinions and be done with it? They don't need to explain to you why they think the song's good in order for them to like it."

totally agreed, the petty annoyance of hearing you complain that you don't agree with an opinion is getting very old!

Also, Piazza is amazing...Musicaldirector...I agree with you

After reading Munk's list, I don't feel such a strong need to post my own. It would be pretty much the same. Maybe Stranger In This World (Taboo) or The Beauty Is (Piazza) would have found their way on to the list, but otherwise his is the list closest to reflecting my own opinions.

I usually refrain from joining broad lists like this, but I'll put my two-cents in:

Defying Gravity - Wicked
You Can't Stop the Beat - Hairspray
The Song That Goes Like This - Spamalot
The King of Broadway - The Producers
Forget About the Boy - Millie
The Light in the Piazza - The Light in the Piazza
It Sucks to Be Me - Avenue Q
For Good - Wicked
Find Your Grail - Spamalot
Dirty Rotten Number - DRS

Now, mind you, I'm not a fan of all those songs, and there are some from the same shows which I prefer more, but I feel the above will have any kind of lasting power as the show's signature. Also, I tried to hit a variety of shows from various seasons, excluding songs written before 5 years (mainly revivals).

...And so, there I was at the stage door for "Equus". The enthused avalanche of "Harry Potter" fans was literally pushing me into the barricades. As I was thrust face-first into Daniel Radcliffe's hat, I suddenly felt the thumb of a lanky gentleman behind me pressing firmly into my back. It was then that I realized that both of his hands had Playbills, and that both arms were outstretched in front of me...

For the record, SOmething Just Broke was added in 1992 to the Donmar Warehouse production in London - so it's not techincally a new song, certainly not last five years....

In no particular order (and many repeats from previous posts):

**Statues and Stories - it's a fantastic opening number
**I Love You Song - cause it's AMAZING
**I Hate the Bus - cause the sentiment rang really true
**The Song That Goes Like This - cause dying is easy & comedy is hard
**Fine Fine Line - cause I couldnt breathe after I saw Steph perform it
**Some Things Are Meant to Be (Little Women) - cause it's lovely and makes a beautiful moment in a crappy show
**Lot's Wife - 'nuff said
**Petrified - 'nuff said again
**Only For Now
**All Things (from Thou Shalt Not...flame away!!)

HONORABLE MENTION
**Its Your Wedding Day
**As We Stumble Along (only because she says PLUMBLE!)
**Astonishing (I love it...sue me)
**Talk Amongst Yourselves
**You Cant Stop the Beat
**Aiutami (forgive the spelling)...if for no other reason that to hear Sarah Uriarte Berry's screaming soprano ... phenomenal

...and then there are songs that I love simply because of the performer/performance:

**Fable
**Gimme Gimme
**Il Adore (Taboo) because Sarah Berry sounds like an angel
**Couldnt Be Happier (I CANNOT believe I listed something from Wicked...kill me now!)

To tell you the truth, I love ALL of the songs on the same level and I think they're ALL amazing songs, so I couldn't really choose my favorite. Besides, if you just asked us to name off great broadway songs, I would just go on and on and on.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves It's Your Wedding Day -- since I saw the show on Saturday I haven't been able to stop listening to the CD. My favorite song is actually probably Somebody Kill Me Please (I start yelling "It all was bull****" at random times - mostly in my head because I can't do that at school) but I know that was in the movie, so I didn't count it.

I don't think it's fair to put anything from Jersey Boys... its not like those songs werent around before five years ago...

There are none. The dearth of even barely decent scores has resulted in a virtual black hole of musical theater and the demise of standards of excellence such as 'best.'

Enchanted Hunter - you continue to amaze me that ANYONE could be so negative - and waste SO much time on a site dedicated to a form they hate so much. You make me sad.

Hey I like it so why the hell not?re: Best 10 Songs of the last 5 years Besides, it's also kind of saying you can't put songs from Mamma Mia or The Lion King up there since it's been in a movie before or it's been sung by a pop group already. I say it can be any song from b-way that has made you have a great time at the theatre and makes you enjoy broadway musicals even more.

Javert: Repeat after me Zsah...Zsah....

Was not "Thoroughly Modern Millie" released sometime in the sixties.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian
