There would't have been nominations. The way the award was framed, it would simply be awarded, like the lifetime achievement tony.

This was a stupid idea to begin with...but since they decided to do it, and now have awarded it to noone, is hysterically more stupid.

It seems like they are saying that the only way to win this award is to be AMAZING in a part (like Reba in Annie Get Your Gun). And, unless you're pulling out a legend performance, you don't get an award.

Maybe they realized that even they didn't fully understand the reqiurements to get the nomination and just gave up on it this year.

touchme---If the only way to get this new award it to be "amazing" like Reba... then why don't they just give a "special" Tony Award when those rare break-through performances come along? (And why didn't they give one to Reba, damn it?)

I'm just askin'. I know you didn't come up with this category yourself (did you? re: No Best Performance for a Recreated Role Tony in 2006)

Personally, I would do away with this entirely, and honor worthy performances when and as they see fit, not with a "regular" award.

First year out of the gate, and it's already not working!

They must also be contracted in the role for a minimum of six months of public performances.

does this mean they have to have been in the role for a min. of 6 months or just contracted for 6 months? if it's the first, that is the reason Jonathan pryce didn't get it.

Actually I think not giving it this year makes sense. The award was created midway through the season. Also, there was a lot of confusion if the winner had to be someone still in the show or if it could be someone who recreated a role for more than 6 months who is no longer in it (for example, Shoshana Bean was in Wicked for more than six months, and she left during this season, so is she eligible? I know she would never have won, don't get on my case, just using her as an example.). It's good to start from a clean slate for next season so that everyone is on the same level/page.

After all that hype and having two wonderful candidates (Atkins and Pryce) and they arent giving it? Thats so stupid. They both deserve that award especailly Pryce). The Tony commitee screwed up big.

I think this is kind of a dumb category too. I know some replacements have been better than originals, but thems the breaks.

When I first heard of the category, I though they meant it for performances in revivals, since those roles were created by someone else.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. Because certain roles practically guarantee kudos if not a Tony Award. Like Tevye, Don Quixote, Sweeney Todd, Mrs. Lovett, etc. -- all performances nominated for revivals in recent years.

And for chrissakes, has there ever been a Mama Rose to NOT win the Tony?

Bernadette Peters, lol. re: No Best Performance for a Recreated Role Tony in 2006

Edit: Ethel Merman didn't win either. She lost to Mary Martin for Sound of Music. Updated On: 5/16/06 at 02:02 PM

Ethel Merman re: No Best Performance for a Recreated Role Tony in 2006

Mary Martin won for Sound of Music.

It's got to be the 6-month thing because Pryce IS giving an incredible performance. I'll admit that I when I first saw him I was prepared to be disappointed and man was I EVER wrong. He's just outstanding and should be recognized.
