I'm also glad it won - not for the humour or anything that people have attacked but for the actual singers on it. Sara Ramirez and Tim Curry in particular deserve the fact it won - simply because they gave such great vocal performances on the cd.

I didnt realise untill now just how 'hated' Spamalot appears to be...it's quite sad.

And can i just say; Lady Of The Lake - i love you man...I wish i had your way with words when replying to silly people on message boards. ;o)

"If you enjoy the cast recording of Spamalot you have a lame and childish sense of humor and no ear for good music."

Ohhhh! I feel so inferior now. I enjoy listening to Spamalot because it makes me laugh. Shame on me! Shame on me! I'm not an uppity snot who believes there should only be one taste in musical theatre....MINE! I'll just slink off and go write a common inferior musical comedy smash hit.

"Spamalot is a ****ing piece of ****."

Not it's not. But even if it were, it's clearly a hit. I'm sure the creators feel like complete idiots.

I guess people forget that the origins of musical theatre are rooted in entertainment rather than complex composition. Spamalot was written to entertain and aimed at a wider audience than musical theatre enthusiasts. And they must be kicking themselves right about now for letting down 1% of their audience. Well, except me, because I laughed my ass off watching it.

While I can say that some of the Piazza score has beautiful memories, it does tend to get...boring. Spamalot, as Elphaba said, isn't one of those recordings that may put you to sleep. It's funny how whiney people can get, and how all of a sudden people comment "Spamalot is a "****ing piece of ****" because it won something.

Proposition 1: Everyone who is on this website has an interest in Broadway.
Proposition 2: Most everyone on this website would like more people to know and understand Broadway so that we can share our passion for Broadway with other people.
Proposition 3: A Spamalot win for best musical Tony helps proposition 2 to some degree, but not much, because people who watch the Tonys already know about Broadway.
Proposition 4: A Spamalot win for best musical recording Grammy has the possibility to make more people interested in Broadway. The average no nothing about Broadway person may follow the Grammy's and more likely may have heard of Monty Python. Seeing that Spamalot won may make him or her more interested in seeing a Broadway show. And it's a short creative journey from Spamalot to Avenue Q to DRS to Bee. Admittedly a longer journey to Piazza, but you have to start somewhere.
I say the more new fans brought to Broadway the better. And what difference does it really make to us which record won the Grammy. We know what we like and we don't really need our likes validated by the Grammy voters. What we really want is for more of the public to validate our love of Broadway.

No Jud, I don't need the public to validate my love of Broadway. What I want is for my idol Adam Guettel to win a freaking Grammy for his recording that features astoundingly good performers singing an astoundingly good score. Further, the album was well-produced and packaged. The audio quality is significantly better than what you hear on the winning album. So I'm interested in (somehow, someday, somewhere) seeing the superior recording recognized. Would that validate my love of Guettel's music? -- I suppose you could look at it that way. But what it would really do is bring some recognition to him and some increased exposure to his art, which would encourage him and his peers to continue writing from the heart instead of exploiting 30 year old jokes as some do.

I agree Ourtime992 that Guettel deserves a Grammy. He is probably very disappointed and rightfully so. However, I hope he doesn't need a Grammy to continue writing beautiful music. I hope that the artists that create new original theater don't need to be recognized by winning awards. I hope that they will continue to explore new ideas and create more great music for us to listen to. I hope they won't just sell out to produce comedy that will win them awards. I hope he wins his Grammy someday. But I believe that more public recognition for Broadway will help all of the artists because it will bring more people to the theater and show the public that Broadway is great.

The quality of the Spamalot score is very poor. It has 4 terriffic numbers (Bright Side of Life, The Song that Goes Like This, Knights of the Round Table, Won't Succeed on Broadway) but the rest of the songs are all forgettable.
DRS and Piazza have scores you can remember, songs you'll want to listent to again. Of the 16 songs from DRS, I like them all. They aren't all my favorites, but they are all terriffic songs. Same with Piazza, there isn't one I don't like. With Spamalot, out of 15 some of songs, I can only pick out 4 standouts.

Well okay, that's your opinion but in my opinion the Piazza music isn't as memorable. Are the singers good? Yes. And yes, it has some beautiful melodies, but truthfully (don't throw tomatoes at me for this) I find the Spamalot recording to just sound...great...everytime I listen! So what it won? I think a lot of people here are just angry because many believe Piazza is the better show of the two...whether or not that is your opinion, it is no tragedy that Piazza lost...it's still doing decent box office wise!

It's okay that people want Piazza to win, everyone holds their own opinion, it's just that people get so angry like it's the end of the world.

Just putting my two cents in. I really liked Spamalot and the others nominated, so I won't say much about them winning. BUT I do want to say is this: Who really gives a hoot about the Grammy's? They are just like any television awards. They are usually stupid and pointless because they don't care about every genre. I like to watch some scifi shows and they never are nominated and if you see the grammy's they got one (didn't check) little slot for musicals. So, if Spamalot gets more 'Grammy' viewers into BWY, thank goodness. Please let us get rid of some of today's music.
