Today's Rent matinee was delayed several minutes at the top of the show. The stand-by for Mark subbed.....any rumors floating out there for why?

I forget his name....the stand-by...they announced it but I was too busy being annoyed. Kaplan a last second scrap at Rent matinee 12/26

His timing was off at the start...jumped a couple of Roger's and Collin's lines. I thought he looked like a young Dana Carvey.....:)

Probably got sick. Vacation. Just because the show was delayed for "several minutes" does not mean that they waited for the stand-by to get ready.

It's Caplan, actually.

But anyway, sounds like there's been some kind of bug going around that cast. re: Kaplan a last second scrap at Rent matinee 12/26 They've all been sick lately.

It was Justin Brill. I asked him after the show - never had been anything other than an ensemble character before - and basically he was going to be Gordon today and was told at 2:05 pm that he was going to be Mark.

Yeah he missed a few lines:
Rent: "Where is He"
Tango: "How did you learn to dance"
but I only knew bc I know like the whole play... and he messed up a line in Tango: Maureen (said You Pretend to Believe her instead of As she keeps you dangling)

However, I thought he was really good... worked very well with Will Chase and I thought he was amazing considering it was his first time ever doing it and did it at the very last minute... I saw it w/Caplan in August and he was good too... I didn't think this guy was any worse though.

talk about a trial by fire for the newbie. Especially with colin hanlon(standby for mark) and peter matthew smith most likey available to go on

I was there as well and expected Hanlon or PMS to go on, simply because they have more experience with the role, so I was kinda surprised when Justin's name was announced. He had a few mess-ups, but he definitely got better (and looked more comfortable) as the show went on.

That's wierd that they sent Justin on, as Colin Hanlon is the standby, and should have been available. I can't imagine the nerves Justin had!

yes, Colin is the standby but usually doesn't hang around the theatre. i also heard that it was a last minute sub...he was probably the only one on hand who could do it...maybe PMS hasn't learned the entire track yet? (although hasn't he done it before?) poor Justin B. Saw him as Gordon on Friday...he's completely precious.

Colin is still listed as a Mark/Roger standby. Josh is also sticking around as a swing for a little. I assume that Justin only went on because it was so last minute.

I was talking to Will the other day about this performance and he said that apparently no one realized until places that Matt hadn't been around. Thus, Justin's last minute notice. Is it just me, or do you think that the stage managers should have realized this before places? That boggled my mind a little. Kudos to Justin though, Will said he hadnt even completely rehearsed the show as Mark before that.

How did they not notice that Matt was not there?

i would seriously love to know how the stage managers didn't notice until places were called that he wasn't there. what's the point of having a sign in sheet system if it isn't going to be utilized?

apparently Matt likes to sign in and then wander around a lot - green room, other people's dressing rooms, etc. and only takes like 5 minutes to get ready. So I figured they're in the habit of checking sign in and then nothign to places. Yet, they should have noticed he didn't sign in........ I think maybe those Stage managers should take a vacation

Nah, he never showed up at all. Because it was a random Monday matinee he never remembered there was a show.

Oh lord... yikes. Remembering halfway through performance time that you HAVE a performance has got to be a great adrenaline rush, eh? re: Kaplan a last second scrap at Rent matinee 12/26 Still... shouldn't they have a number they could try to call him at if he hadn't shown up by call time? Is there an Equity rule on this?

inishmore is right...he forgot since they don't usually have a monday matinee. i'm sure the stage managers had a contact number, but when you don't even realize until AFTER 2 that he's not there, what's the point? the stage managers royally screwed that up. i know there's some equity rule about making call time...not exactly sure what it is though.

If a musician did that, the show would be screwed, and he'd probably be fired.....if Matt really did just forget about the performance, that's really unprofessional!! He's lucky they have standbys there.
