Patronus, we know she can sing it. She's more than proven that. But can she dance? She's the right age range, but I don't think she looks the part at all.
My vote goes to Addy.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with Britney Murphy either. I think it'd suit her well actually. Her voice is probably better than Christina Applegates truth be told.
I wouldn't mind seeing Jane Krakowski in the role. And possible in a few years, Amber Benson.
Britney would have been good as Charity. The thing is that Christina Applegate can't really sing...so any girl who can dance could do it.

Regardless of what you or I think of her talent, Brittany Murphy is too big of a film star to replace anyone on Broadway right now. Don't look for that career move anytime soon.
Lightening up a bit, I suppose this is more of a "dream" situation than a realistic one, which is fine by me.
Then if I were going to "dream" (pun intended) about who I'd like to see take over the part, I'd say Beyonce... but she's a little busy right now, too.

yes, my suggestion of Brittany was definitely a dream situation. i truly think she'd be perfect, yes, even tho she's a bit youthful. much more believable as a downtrodden hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold than Applegate (who i loved, for the record). i think she's a terrific actress.
Jane Krakowski is clearly a great choice but as I've learned from others on the board, she was actually supposed to open the show and got fired because apparently she considered the book to be sexist and so Neil Simon decided that she was not going to be Charity. I believe Sarah Jessica Parker is the perfect actress for this role, her singing voice is good enough for Charity, I'm sure she can dance the role too, and she has perfect comic timing. And if we are going for dream situations, then Charlotte D'Amboisse should replace Applegate but the Weisslers would never let her play this role full-time unless the show becomes an established hit, and I don't think that's gonna be happenning anytime soon.

Ann Reinking seems an obvious choice but 1.She's probably too old for the show,2.She replaced Debbie Allen in the Fosse-directed 1986 revival and I've heard/read that she was less than stellar. The show closed during her run. I wasn't even a year old back then so I'm not saying this from personal experience.

If you're looking for a redhead AND a non-celeb, Karen Ziemba would certainly more than do justice to the role. I saw her in a performance of Dorothy Fields' work last spring where she did If My Friends Could See Me Now and Hey Big Spender. Sang, acted, and danced the hell out of both of them. I looked around at the audience hoping to see Fran and Barry eating their hearts out (they offered her Nicky originally - she said thanks, but no thanks).

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
