She should come back to Broadway soon.

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

Her break was a national Grease tour!

Marquise, you are right. I worked a portion of the tour of "Grease" back in the 70's with a young Marilu Henner (she was great) and John Travolta. That was some cast - also Judy Kaye, Jeff Conway from "Taxi" and Michael Lembeck, now a famous director - okay he's done better than the current "Santa Clause 3" but a guy's gotta work, right?

Marilu Henner couldn't even shine Ann Reinking's shoes. As far as I'm concerned, after the original cast left, it was all downhill from there...

re: Marilu Henner in Chicago

Marilu Henner originated the role of Marty in the original Chicago workshop/production of GREASE. She never thought the show would work in New York, she declined to reprise the role when it was mentioned to open Off-Broadway. After seeing the complete reworking of the play, she regretted this, especially seeing the buzz the show was creating, which helped get the play transferred to Broadway and break records.

She eventually was offered Marty in the 1st National Tour, which is where she met the young Johnny Travolta who played Doody in the tour.

Marilu made her Broadway debut in the 1974 Broadway production of the 1940's flavored "OVER HERE!, which was created by the GREASE team. This musical, which starred Patty and Maxene Andrews (of the legendary Andrews Sisters trio), had a roster of young performers who would come in on their own immediately following their tenure in the show:

Ann Reinking
Treat Williams
John Travolta
Marilu Henner
John Mineo
Janie Sell
Phyllis Somerville
Jim Weston
Samuel E. Wright

After the show closed, Marilu went into the Broadway production of GREASE, where she finally was able to play Marty ON BROADWAY, the character she created back in in Chicago.

Several years later she would become known as Elaine on the highly successful ABC TV series TAXI.

Jump to 1997 when Ann Reinking was finally planning on leaving the revival of CHICAGO. After much haggling from Ann, Marilu agreed to get back into her dancing shoes and return to Broadway in a musical. Ann coached her once co-star, one-on-one.

She talks about doing Chicago and being in Grease in this American Theatre Wing seminar video.
