A chorus line...#0

looks like we're doing a chorus line at my church (a tamed version) and I don't know much about it... My previous roles have been Harold Hill, Gaston, and Schroeder but I don't know what role I'd want in A Chorus Line... any suggestions/information?

There are a number of male roles but all we know about you is that you are male and was born on October 30th so until we know more it would be difficult to make any suggestions.

Okay, well I am built for Gaston really... but I have a big range... 57 notes if you include falsetto and whatnot... my dancing is fine and my acting is big and bold... not subtle at all so I don't want any weak characters... I'm really confident and have stage presence... I knew there would be no humble way to do this... but you asked.

Your church is doing this? A liberal church I hope?

Is there an official "cleaned up" version of the show, or is your church making illegal cuts?

Just wondering how "Dance 10, Looks Three" will be done... ?

Maybe Val will just sing "THIS and THAT" and point.

Maybe they should just cut her whole character.

Based on what you said... Go for Bobby or Al.
Or since it's a youth production... even Zach.

...And Paul's monologue? Will there be anything left for him to say? (I picture him walking out for that scene with a big piece of tape over his mouth.)

I don't even know any characters by name yet, we don't have scripts yet.. so can you go by song title of what they sing...

Go to ibdb, and search A Chorus Line. There you will be able to find a song list, and who sings what.

Well, Bobby doesn't have his own song, but he has a LOT of dialogue (comparatively). Very outgoing, kinda stand-up comic-ish. Comes from a very average (aka BORING in his eyes) family. His monologue is very funny.

Al is married to Kristine (sp?) and does "Sing!" with her. She can't.

Zach doesn't have a number either. He's the director/choreographer of the show. He dances the opening number with the cast, then goes to the back of the house for most of the show, until his scenes with Cassie and Paul, etc. Toward the end. It's a great role, though.

If you tap, you could also go for Mike ("I Can Do That!") But based on your own comments about being big, broad and outgoing, I'd say brush up on Bobby. It's a fun role.

EDIT: This is one of those shows where you really can't go by "songs." For the most part, the show isn't constructed that way. It's mostly vignettes with very few self-contained songs. Every character has his or her moment to shine.

I saw a student version once, and Val sang T&A instead of Tits and Ass. It was my introduction to the show and I was really surprised when I heard the cast recording and she was saying the actual words!
"Let me get my hat, and my knife!"
"What?"
"I must meet your wife..."
