....was never brought to the stage? Seems like an obvious choice for an adaptation, with such classic songs as NY,NY and But the World Goes Round. Who'd play the De Niro and Liza characters?
I was thinking the same when I watched this film, but I think Kander & Ebb only wrote two songs for the show which is not enough to make a stage show. That's probably why the songs are part of a revue show instead.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
Hmmm....Caroline, I like the idea but it would take a lot of work. The movie used many classic, already-written standards ("Blue Moon," "The Man I Love") in addition to the Kander and Ebb songs. It seems like some new music would be called for. That said, Broadway shows, Millie for example, have had success with a mixture of old and original tunes.
The script was a bit of a mess, I recall. Everything would depend on a talented writer adapting the film into a coherent, engaging book.
"Do you know ChrisLovesShows?" "Yes. Why, yes he does!"
A composer friend of mine has always said that this and Dennis Potter's Pennies From Heaven are the two screen musicals he would love to adapt for the stage.
