Broadway names pronunciation#0
Posted: 9/24/05 at 7:45pm
Just a silly question

Today, someone asked me who Brooke Shields replaced as Roxie...

And I went Charlotte D'....
I realized there are a few Broadway names that people don't know how to say correctly, I can think of three right now, but I'm sure there is more I can think of

Is it D'amboisee or D'ambooas?
It is La Chan- s or La Chan-cey?
Is it James Lapeen or La- paeen

P.S. Does this belong to the off-topic board?

That was very nice thank you.
I actually though that it had an accent in the "eh", as in La Chan- sehy

Interesting.

LaChiusa

I think I'm getting it right, but I've never had to say his name aloud before. I keep feeling guilty whenever a song from his shows comes up on my iPod.

BSO, where are you?

I'm pretty sure it's "Dam-Bwozz" - in French, the "e" at the end means you pronounce the "s".

Blanche DuBois - "Doo Bwah" Charlotte D'Amboise - "Dam Bwazz"

I actually searched on it before you posted your answer and found an interview where he says it's "la-kee-OO-sa". And he goes by Michael John, not just Michael. Interesting.

That's sort of what I meant. I mean, if you say it all together rather than sounding out the syllables, la-kee-OO-sa sort of sounds like what I meant. This is so hard!

I'm glad I wasn't attacked for posting something "stupid".

I have another one

Judy Kon or Koon
Sheyene Jackson or is it like Latin singer Chayanne?

So I can really say for sure Charlotte Dam-Bwozz?

Dam-bwahz is correct. But don't make the z too big of a deal.

I think it's MARE-in, but I could be wrong; I just discovered last week I've been saying D'Amboise incorrectly all my life...or for however long I've known who Charlotte is...

My mom is from Rockford, IL originally (where Marin Mazzie is from), and whenever I've been there and people have referred to her, it's been Mare-in (like a horse). I do know a Marin that's pronounced Mar-in, though.

Edit: I'm not saying that I know that the people in Rockford are pronouncing it correctly, I just know that's how I've heard them say it. So I vote for Mare-in.
