Alright, who liked it, who didn't? did it do ALW's masterpiece justice?
To days of inspiration, playing hookie, making somethin' out of nothin', the need to express, to communicate, to going against the grain, going insane, going mad....To being an us for once instead of a them...La Vie Boheme
I didn't care for either one really. I thought Minnie Driver was the best thing in that picture, if that clues you in to how I felt about it.
"For me, THEATRE is an anticipation, an artistic rush, an emotional banquet, a jubilant appreciation, and an exit hopeful of clearer thought and better worlds."

Agree with CARL MAGNUM not a mastepiece by any measure but who says entertainment needs to be. Phantom is a brilliant piece of hockum and makes for a great night out! "F@*#k art let's party!"
"Your eyes..... they shine like the pants on my blue serge suit"
I wasn't entertained by either -- I was bored to tears.

I hated the movie version... and I loved the stage version. I'm sure it was mainly due to the actors because I didn't like anyone in the movie but Patrick Wilson. The stage actors I saw were a lot more talented than the movie ones.
I agree. I think it is a powerful show and it takes a talented cast. I was not at all impressed with the movie. But, there they go again trying to turn Hollywood actors into performers. I didn't mean that I thought it was his masterpiece, or one at all for that matter. But everyone is referring to it as a masterpiece. I ment to put "__" around it. My bad! My personal favorites are Aspects of Love and Evita.

i, on the contrary, absolutely love the movie. granted, i have never seen the stage version, but i just love the movie. i own it, and i watch it all the time. in fact, i just watched it last night, haha. its my favorite movie. i don't really understand how any theatre person couldn't love that movie. but that's just me.
"forget regret <3, I love your post.....you give me hope for the next generation!" -Elphaba
I hated the movie, the acting and singing was terrible, and to be honest, I am a huge fan of the show, but it really doesn't work on film, the movie bored me!!!!
"You alone can make my song take flight, it's over now, the Music of the Night!!!!!"
I don't consider it ALW's "masterpiece" considering the strongest components of the show are the set and the costumes. The show is so-so, but too repetitive and the second act drags horribly. The film just made it all worse. Minnie Driver was probably the only thing in the film worth salvaging.
"What can you expect from a bunch of seitan worshippers?" - Reginald Tresilian
I really liked it. It's not as bad as it seems, and its nice to look at as well.
"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."
To Kill A Mockingbird
I liked the movie when I first saw it b/c I hadn't seen the stage version yet and had nothing else to compare it to. Now that I've seent he stage version, I have to say that on stage is at least 10 times better than the movie!
"Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets."
-Oscar Wilde
i think both sucked! but that Emmy is the worst actress i have ever seen. So the movie is even worse!
"People have their opinions and that doesn't mean that their opinions are wrong or right. I just take it with a grain of salt because opinions are like as*holes, everyone has one".
-Felicia Finley-
I think the movie was beautifully filmed. I just think Patrick and Emmy look most of the time like they need an enema. And, personally, the source material isn't that great.
Well I'm in the minority here but I personally love the movie. I admit it had its faults, but I still love it. I think it's designed and shot gorgeously, and all I think is beautiful when I watch it. I'm a huge fan of the show as well, and appreciated the performances more than most, particularly Gerry(if it wasn't known or obvious). I love the music, and suspend reality for what's necessary but it really is one of my favorites.
"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli
The one thing I see in favor of the way the movie was translated was that they didn't make major changes to the source (e.g., A Chorus Line). That would have totally destroyed the film.
Neither one was great but the stage show bored me to tears. If I had to choose I would favor the movie over the stage production.
