I was on my way to BEST BUY to buy "The Music Man" on DVD. Before, there was a section marked "Musicals". So I automatically went to look for that section to find that it was replaced by "Television" Old sitoms and such.
I asked and they told me, "you just have to look around"
I went to another BEST BUY and the same happened.

So I decided to go to FYE, which I remembered they had a sale on Musical DVDs, but didnt have money. When I went, they had a small little section and only had "The Wizard of Oz" "CHICAGO", you can say popular musicals.

The only place I know for sure that they have a secure Musical section is Virgin Megastore in the city (NYC Times Square).
I guess now you have to go to the heart of the source which is Broadway. Now if I want to buy a Musical DVD, I have to pay an additional $4.00 to go and come back in train. (unless i have an unlimited metrocard)

Tower Records is another choice, at least here on the West Coast

Yeah, the exact same thing happened at the Best Buy here. Fortunately my Barnes and Noble has a fairly good collection of musicals on DVD.

Is there a MediaPlay near you? They have an excellent Musicals DVD section. If not, nobody seems to top good old Amazon.

Yep! Same problem with the Best Buys and Circuit Citys near me.

Usually the music/movie stores like Suncoast, Coconuts, Sam Goody, FYE, Tower - will have a section just for Musicals.

I find lately in most music stores I got to, the musicals are combined with movie soundtracks and you're hard pressed to find a musical...

I've pretty much given up on buying musical DVDs in stores (although I did get Phantom of the Opera from WalMart) I just order them online. But our SamGoody has an ok musical section, but only really major musical movies, which sucks, but that seems to be our society today. Elyse. No day but today.

And these retailers wonder why they're losing business to the internet.....

Over $25 and the shipping is free at Amazon.com, so just buy more than one at a time. That's where I get most of my DVDs now anyway, they usually have better prices than most stores do, and usually always have what I want.

If you're looking for an actual store, try small music stores in your area, like second-hand CDs and stuff. They usually have a pretty eclectic assortment of DVDs. I just found this store in DC this summer that had a huge selection of musical DVDs that I hadn't seen in many other places. Huge companies like Best Buy are going to have 10,000 copies of The Aviator and nothing else, but independent stores are separate from the mainstream DVD market.

haha... I got my copy of the DVD of Les Mis in Concert on Ebay. What I wasn't counting on was the completely Japanese menu and Japanese subtitles.

That's right! You do have to actually hunt for musical DVDs. At Fry's, I wanted the Sweeney Todd DVD. They had it...with 3 other DVDs in a Sondheim set. I was so pissed off because my mom wouldn't get the set for me just to see Sweeney Todd. Grrrr...

I love my Borders! They are usually stocked pretty well with musical DVDs. Try Borders.

Kristin Chenoweth could barely control a Great Dane she trotted onto the stage. "Great, they gave me a dog that weighs five times what I do", she quipped. For the record, she weighs 93 pounds, and has a Maltese.

Suncoast, Barnes and Noble, FYE, and Borders have a good selection of movie musicals. Sometimes to find them, you might need to look in another genre of film like comedy and you should find them.

That happened at our Best Buy too....then recently they made a seperate section for musicals again. Not sure if they had complaints or were just rearranging, but they finally have their section back.....

J&R Music World, which has already been mentioned, is very good because they knock about two bucks off the price you would pay at Virgin, Tower, etc. If it's convenient for you, check them out before anywhere else.

I've found Borders to be a good choice, too. Saturday Matinee used to have a fair section, but I haven't been in there lately.
Otherwise, it's Amazon. Our Walmart lumps everything under "Soundtracks" and only carries a small selection of shows. If you want anything besides Wicked or Phantom, you're sort of out of luck. I understand their on-line choices are better, though.

Borders, at least the one I go to in DC, has a "Musicals" section. You can usually find anything there. Although, they only have the Sondheim DVDs as a set, and don't sell them separately. Tower Records in Foggy Bottom (DC) also has a pretty good selection.

I'd be ecstatic if Sh-K Boom or ghostlight would start adding these to their list of merchandise.

Also, why has it been so long since they've recorded a musical - I'm not talking about one they've made into a movie, I mean ala Pippin which is a professionally taped live performance? I love these and I wish there were more of them for posterity's sake.

I've found lots of stuff at Borders. But Amazon all the way, they have nearly everything you'd want, unless it's REALLY obscure.
