Having seen 2 previous productions of "Millie", being Broadway and touring, I wasn't sure about a High School production (even if it was choreographed by Megan Campbell, who understudied Sutton).
It was amazing. Guys, look out for the name Chloe Tucker. She gave an amazing performance. The set design was ripped right from the show, the costumes were very well done, and all the acting was very good (even if some singing was off).
If you are in LA, go see this. It's a phenomenal and spectacular way to spend an evening.
What a coincidence! I was there tonight too and I must add my praise to Shira's. Hamilton High's Academy of Music was truly fortunate to get the rights to Millie (due to some lucky connections and the school's deserved reputation). Yes, as Shira states, Miss Chloe Tucker sings, dances, and acts the title role to perfection! A petite bundle of talent and charisma. And as Trevor Graydon, Kelly Tatro steals every scene he's in, making the part uniquely his own. Special credit for the outstanding ensemble dancing must be given to choreographer Megan Campbell, a not-so-long-ago Hamilton grad who went on to the Broadway company of Millie, performing the title role a number of times. A big cast, big orchestra, nice sets, and performances several steps above what even good high school productions can achieve, this possibly first non-professional production is a winner, and highly recommended.
"Chicago is it's own incredible theater town right there smack down in the middle of the heartland. What a great city! I can see why Oprah likes to live there!" - Dee Hoty :-D
Battling Millie threads!!! The Equity tour ends, a theater in Massachusetts screws it up, and an arts high school in L.A. does it quite extraordinarily. Amazing coincidence at BWW.com!
omg, i know chloe!!! well i don't KNOW her but i totally did theatre with her like 7 years ago. we wouldn't recognize each other if we were walking down the street, but i remember that name! weeeeeeeird. now i'll definitely have to see it.
Not cheap, but more or less what the "other" arts high school (LACHSA) is charging for Dreamgirls at the Alex in Glendale in June. $23 + $1 service charge if you reserve in advance, which I recommend, because the house was nearly full. Probably reasonably priced for such a big show and the rights must have cost a pretty penny.
Check out Sunday's New York Times (5/ for an article about high school productions and their expanding production values. Great reading...glad to see $$ going to arts and not just sports!
We're lucky in the L.A. area that both Hamilton High and LACHSA are able to attract the most talented students from a large talent pool, so productions by these two schools are going to be several notches above what most any other local high school can do. Once again, if you can make it to West L.A. see Millie, and remember that LACHSA is doing Dreamgirls at the Alex on June 3rd and 4th. Purchase Tickets for Dreamgirls Here
