Just something I found interesting. Wow. I can't say I'd ever pay that much for a dress...Worn by Judy Garland or not. Then again, if I had the money...Who knows?

If I had the money, I would love to own this.

#7A dress of Judy's...
Posted: 4/27/05 at 2:15pm

Hi theatreboy,

There were several duplicate dresses made for Judy and her double, Bobbie Koshay, to wear. There are at least 4 blue and white pinafore's, one black and yellow ochre, and a slew of pinafores that she tested before and during the initial shoot when Richard Thorpe was directing. Any prominate costume for a shoot that lasted as long as "Oz" did will have at least one continuity (or backup) duplicate. The same go for the famous Ruby Slippers. Although Judy wore one primary pair throughout shooting, there are 4 identical pairs in private collections. Debbie Reynolds owns a pair of ornately sequined/jeweled, curled-toe Ruby Slippers that Judy screen tested in 1938, but were soon scrapped for a sleeker sequined pump with flat, rhinestone bows.

The buyer was an eccentric wealthy "Elphaba" supporter who has announced he will use the dress as toilet tissue.

Egads, Joe! Don't joke like that! :)

I think Wicked is a fun show...but it gets me that SO MANY people consider the original 1939 film as the ONLY source material for the original novel and book of the show. I suppose it's due to the fact that they were able to slip a few of the MGM traits through the back door. Such as Glindas bubble and being from the North of Oz. They never refer to Nessa's shoes as Silver or Ruby Slippers, but I think it's keen how they turn from silver to red when Elphaba puts the spell on them.

I was at the auction of the Ruby Slippers at Christies a few years ago, and we were joking about the eccentric's that were going to buy them and wear them to vaccuum the house in. That implied, crazy Elphaba fan is out there somewhere...I just know it.
