I've been hearing lot of different theories and I'm curious as to what you guys think. Do you think you have to be born a great singer? or that voice lessons can teach you how to be a great singer?

you think you know but you have no idea.....

It depends.
Some of us were born with it.
Other have it they just need to find it.

That does not help you does it?

I think everyone can sing, its just a matter of find what your voice is, I think the main problem is that people rarely want to find and refine their own instrument, they take in alot from other voices and wish to sound like them, and are very rarely happy till they do...for instance I always wanted to sound like Brooks Ashmantas from Songs For A New World, then people started harping on me for trying to hard to change what I sounded like, and my voice has grown.

what I mean is anyone can sing, finding your own voice is the key.

I think anyone can learn to carry a tune. I have a friend that was terrible seven years ago and now he is totally amazing. So, I also think you can learn to be great.

Stevos? Terrible? Wow, I think I've heard it all!

Hahahaa

Personally I think you can improve what you have, but I think you're either born with it or you're not. I've been singing since I was 4

Anyone can be taught to sing, provided that they are not completely tone deaf. And by that, one must speak in a completely monotone voice to be truly tone deaf. Other than that, what most people really mean when they say they're tone deaf is that they are in serious need of pitch training.

Now being a great singer is something that goes beyond talent, I believe. One can have an extraordinary voice, but if they can't put forth the emotion and meaning of the song in performance, then I don't believe they are "great". I've watched a few people go through years and years of training and they have lovely voices, but the performance just isn't there. That's what performance training is for and, even then, sometimes you just can't MAKE someone a performer.

My voice teacher, Mr. Letcher, told me to always sing from my diaphragm and he recommended that I take off my shirt so that I can see it while I am singing and the audience cheers loudly and throws things like keys and underwear on stage and nice older men take me to dinner and buy me bling bling and now I know that I was born to sing. I don't believe that everyone can sing...or at least sing well. But most people can improve. Still, I think that some lucky ones are born with exceptional voices. If they have also been born with musicality and the ability to convey meaning in a song....then, they may be truly extraordinary. There are some voices with a sound quality that is inherently compelling.

What is really sad is to see someone who was born with the gift of a beautiful voice and has thought that was enough....that there was no need to cultivate it.

it depends on how you define the meaning of a great singer.

singing lessons certainly make anyone a better singer.

I still maintain that anyone can be taught to sing and sing well. Now that's not to say that everyone can be taught to sing exceptionally well and to have an exceptional singing voice. True enough, some people are simply born with great voices.

I was born not being able to hold a note, now I'm a singer who can't read music but I've sang for the President of the United States George W. Bush.
