yes, how dare they...why can't they do ORIGINAL musicals...I hate shows that have to resort to using source material!

Like that horrible FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (I'd much rather stay home and read the Sholom Alecheim stories instead of slogging my way through those unoriginal songs),

and MAME (the book AND the play AND the movie AUNTIE MAME all came before the musical...sheesh, like we hadn't had enough!).

HELLO DOLLY was just fine as "The Matchmaker", who needed to hear those terrible songs?

LES MISERABLE was fine as an old book, who wants to hear those characters sing??

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA? 3 movies already, why did they bother??

as stated above, LIL ABNER, YOURE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN and ANNIE were doing just fine with 3 black and white inches in the paper, I didn't need to see all that color on stage!!

WEST SIDE STORY?? pa shaww!!! Shakespeare got it right with "Romeo & Juliet"...like we all needed another Bernstein/Sondheim score

and GYPSY!! I have a beaten up copy of the memoir by Miss Lee, I certainly have no place in my life for all that ingenious staging and fantastic storytelling and all that brilliant music or those staggering lyrics. Those hacks!! Didn't Robbins, Laurents, Styne & Sondheim have an original idea in their copy cat brains??

The movie was bad, I don't expect that the stage version could possibly be any better.

I would just like to see how it is staged and the costumes. I wonder if they will go with the theme park style or a more adult (if possible) version.

So, are Basketcase and I the only two people on the planet who didn't go gaga for the Shrek films? I don't know if i'd call them "bad", but, I think the animation is really quite ugly (though I appreciate all the hard work that goes into that type of thing) and I laughed, but, The story really lacks any likeable characters. There's really no drama because you don't give a crap what happens to anyone. Or maybe tha twas just me?

Sounds exactly like BATMAN. Well, this time, I'm not getting excited. And what's going on with Spiderman? Tarzan? Lord of the Rings? Little Mermaid? Legally Blonde? And all of the other hyped lies from Broadway and Playbill and wherever... It's all junk. It's all hype. It's all crap

And to all the smartasses who think they know everything: What makes you think you'll know SHREK when you see it onstage? The original book by William Steig is NOTHING like the movie! What makes you think the stage won't go through the same process (in regards to the translation)? They'll have different songs, different lines, a different running-plot, and probably a lot more faithful to the Steig book. Look at Mary Poppins in London. Some people would have grumped, because it would've turned the same story/movie into a stage show, but it's (meant to be) radically different (like the book). They'll change Shrek. Don't just judge it by the DreamWorks movie version (and because they are producing the stage show, it doesn't mean they'll keep it the same: look at Disney with Mary Poppins!). At least consider the original story by Steig before posting! There are legitimate fans of Shrek, out there, beyond the movies - and they are the kind who can see possibility in this, and not dismiss it directly as a carbon of the film (which, I've a feeling, judging from the new writer's credits, IT WON'T BE!). I only hope, if it's happening, that it happens - and doesn't wind up like everything else: FORGOTTEN, TOP-SECRET, and NEVER TALK IT ABOUT IT AGAIN! In other words: a gossip-rumour 7 years old

rockfenris2005- hehe I feel so stupid because I never knew the Shrek the movie was based off a novel. Learn something new everyday. I hope that if Shrek: The Musical realluy does come to broadway, I pray that it will be closer to the original novel. Thank you for giving me some hope in this idea.

Incidently, SHREK is not a Disney film.

And as for those other shows in the works, one should note that some shows take SEVERAL years to get to the stage, some are fortunate (or not) to make it quickly. There's a process involved (re: Little Mermaid, Legally Blonde, etc).

I don't know, this seems kinda weird. I mean I've heard about theatres doing Shrek on stage but a musical? Maybe it'll work, I'm just suprised because I mean no offense but Shrek??? Wow! Well, I have to go see that on stage. But then again they've made some movies into great musicals like Hairspray. I can't wait to see this....interesting.....musical.

I think it is disgusting that nobody can come up with original new ideas for Broadway. While I loved Millie it used the movie as source material. Wicked used the book. I am not saying that I don't understand the need for source material, (there are classics that used source material) but I can not comprehend why there are no new ideas or why Broadway has to resort to cartoons like Shrek for shows.

So are you implying that you hate revivals also? Those certainly are not "original new ideas". And when someone does try to come up with something new (Brooklyn, Taboo, etc) the same people who complain about lack of original ideas trash the shows. Just because something is adapted from a movie, has nothing to do with the quality of the show. Just look at Hairspray,Lion King, Beauty and The Beast,Phantom etc. They were all movies before hitting Broadway and are now some of the longest running most popular shows around. If you think "Wicked went by the book" then I guess you must not have read it, or seen the show. They are vastly different.

First of all, the movie was a lot different than the actual show. Second, there have been tons of shows based on films. Some include:

Little Shop of Horrors
Beauty and the Beast
Lion King
Hairspray
The Producers
42nd Street

Those shows have been a success (with the exception of LSOH, which closed early). The films weren't exactly carbon copies of the show. What's wrong with using a film as an idea?

I said I loved Millie and yes I realize most of it is different from the movie. However it is the same plot and idea. I'm not saying to completely give up the use of source material, (I loved "Wonderful Town" a revival, which used "My Sister Eileen" for its source.) I just think there is better source material than "Shrek," and that there needs to be more original ideas for Broadway.
