Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrel

Anyone heard of, or read, this novel by Susanna Clarke?
It is supposedly one of the finest pieces of literature in recent memory.
It has gotten amazingly stellar reviews and Neil Gaiman said it "is unquestionably the finest English novel of the fantastic written in the last seventy years."

I bought it today and am going to begin it soon.

Priest - what, exactly, is a 'novel of the fantastic'?

To be honest, I really don't know.
It is fantasy literature a la LORD OF THE RINGS and HARRY POTTEr only with more relaism and historical context.

I am not a big fan of LORD OF THE RINGS at all.

It's reviewed in tomorrow's New York Times Book Review.

Can't say the critique made me want to run out and buy it.

Just looked it up on Amazon. It sounds fascinating, I will have to check it out. And it's 800 pages long, too. That makes me happy.
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

Just bumping this back up as it's published in the UK in a couple of weeks and the buzz is starting to build. It's on the longlist for the Booker Prize and will no doubt make the shortlist when it is announced next week. I intend to read every book on the longlist, and can't wait to read this.
