This is musical score has generated more recordings than any other show score, not counting single cuts.

Do you know it?

(Magruder please wait a minimum of 12 hours before posting your response, lol.)

In English alone it surpasses all others. If one were to add foreign language records it would still be the leader of the most recordings.

This one has me stumped. Let me go check the deep deep reaches of my brain to figure this one out. It is probably one I own and I'll kick myself for not knowing it.

Well, I don't know the answer, but may I guess? I would figure it would be My Fair Lady with The King & I as first runner-up.

OK, I'll take a guess, too. I know that Jesus Christ Superstar has a boat load of recordings. At least 20.

I believe West Side Story has been recorded by everyone and their grandmothers.

That is, if your grandmother is Kiri Te Kanawa.

"This is musical score has generated more recordings than any other show score, not counting single cuts."

So, Bulldog, we are talking about recordings of the entire score (i.e., the cast album), not recordings of individual songs from the score, right? And you don't mean "recordings" as in prints of the same album or CD, correct? As in "the original cast album of MY FAIR LADY sold 2 million copies." That's not what we're looking for?

OK, guys, we know it's not Jesus Christ Superstar, which has about 25 seperate recordings. So think BIG! 25 or more recordings!

Chris, your assumptions are right, different recordings of the swcore, and you are also correct that it is not CATS.

No one has mentioned Les Miserables. Doesn't this have a lot of versions? I definitely don't think its "A Chorus Line".

WOW! There are so many bright, intelligent and knowledgable musical theatre members of this board that I am surpisingly stunned no one in 24 hours has guessed correctly. The muscial score I'm referencing was not a success when it open at the Alvin (now Simon) Theatre, closing after 124 performances. It did not recoup its $50,000 total investment even after a Guild sponsored post-Broadway tour of the original production. The piece itself was the last stage musical written by its composer, one of America's greatest--George Gerswhin.

PORGY AND BESS, has had over 40 distinct recordings of its score--vocal, instrumental, jazz. "Summertime" as a single certainly exceeds that number of recordings by the ten-folds. PORGY AND BESS opened nearly 68 years ago on 10/10/35.

It has proven to be a timeless musical score.

Kicking myself!! I can't tell you how many times I have played that music in Orchestras. One of them probably made a recording of it somewhere along the way. Kicking self again!

Porgy and Bess has more recording than Showboat?

I don't think that is possible.

What is your reference source on this and what does it show the volume of SHOWBOAT recordings are to date?? thanks:)
