Hello, all. My question of the day: is it possible to volunteer usher at Nine? If so, how? Also, does anybody know how to usher at Big River? Where and when do volunteers need to sign up? It's not like I want to see the shows or anything--I just feel that volunteering is the right thing to do.

Yours in the spirit of selflessness,

Jenny

Oh, Jenny. If you want to do something worthwile with your volunteer time go to a homeless shelter or local church. Why volunteer to usher? People can find their seats without one! And if you don't want to see the show, why else would you do this.
Besides, I am pretty sure they are all part of some union in the larger houses.
It's great to volunteer but do it for something that will actually help people in need.
PEACE.

Well I agree. Don't volunteer usher just to volunteer - do it because you want to see the show but can't afford the ticket.

As for your original question - No, there are no volunteer ushers at Nine. I checked once. Roundabout does have volunteer ushers for Cabaret (which has afforded me the opportunity to see several of the rotating cast) and I think another of its Broadway houses but not Nine.

Volunteeer ushering at 54 is such a snap. Once you register in person at the theatre (it used to be on Sat. from 5-6 pm only), that's all you do. You don't even have to call them if you can't make it. They have plenty of staff ushers, and are extending themselves to volunteers so that they can see the show.

Important Note: You have to have a white dress shirt and black pants. That's the required attire. I was going to do it a while back but decided not to.

Have any of you ush'ed at the AA theater? I glimpsed some volunteers there when I saw Big River but I didn't have a chance to ask them about the system. Do you have to sign up in advance à la Cabaret or can you just turn up in your snappy black-and-whites the day of the show?

By the way...did someone urge me to volunteer at my local church instead of devoting my big-hearted self to ushering? Puh-lease! If there's one thing that people need more than spiritual guidance, it is guidance to their seats.

Sincerely,

Jenny

You sign up in person at Studio 54 at around 5 pm for Cabaret. Then you have to be there a half hour before the house opens, which would be 6:30 since the theatre serves drinks, etc to the theatregoers at 7.

Okay, young ‘un. There are those out in the big old world who think that we here on this board are a little too "nice" and like to poke some fun at us. Well, I believe we were all a little hoodwinked by one of’m into thinking there was a little gal just wantin’ to do some good fur some folks in big ol’ NYC.

I am pretty jaded, but fell for it. I am still laughing.

Good one Jenny, but Old Auntie Suleen caught on ter ya!

PEACE.

Private joke, only one person gets it-anyway, I don't know if things are changed now, but a few years ago Roundabout was using volunteer ushers at all their shows. I did it, so I know it was true then. Maybe they only use them at 54 now.
