OMIGOD!

I NOW HOPE this woman (whom I was never a fan of)….

Kicks Freaking Ass on that stage....on July 11…..

I hate snobbism of any kind ...especially performance arts related….

And this women’s has been getting a crap load of it thrown at her...

See, I get it,.....

We are supposed to forgive the transgressions of a Bernadette Peters, even when she’s miscast, because she was great on Broadway 10-15 years ago…

…and we are to give a “Broadway” performer anywhere from 2-3 months to “get into” the part…even when all the signs are there that it’s a bad fit…..

But..

We are to hurl tomatoes at any one that is deemed “unfit” for Broadway…

EVEN BEFORE THEY STEP FOOT ON A STAGE…

That’s the deal, right!

May I remind everyone how Reba was ridiculed until the first preview performance of “AGYG”, where in the course of 2 and half hours, she wiped the floor with “all-time-legend-theatre-goddess-untouchable” Bernadette’s previous performances?

If Melanie sucks, she sucks...

...but it won't be the only performance on the Great White Way to do so...

...some "sucky" performances are even given by a few "Theatre legends" or two......

Voice,
I would just like to let you know that I hold the 'Broadway' stars AND the 'Hollywood' stars to the same expectatins and my dilike of Miss Griffith has nothing to do with her being from 'Hollywood'. Just for the record. I actually hope she does great and puts me in my place for doubting her, but, sadly, I am not expecting it.

I'm with you crazy8... clearly it'll be wonderful for the show if she proves us all wrong and kicks ass... I am all for anything that keeps my friends gainfully employed!

I have seen it happen before.... I am not expecting much.

Well, voiceanth, you could always go do promos for the drag shows in Provincetown, boosterism always trumps criticism there... perhaps the sun fried your brain out while you were there.

Just like all of the griping that went on when Anne Heche was cast in Proof. She ended up giving a sensational performance that made converts of some critics that didn't originally like the play. You never know what an actor or actress is capable of until they hit the stage.

yeah, well proof didn't require any singing or dancing....

I think, honestly, if Melanie had been cast in a straight play nobody would be complaining.....

'cept Catherine in Proof is no walk in the park. She's off the stage for about a total of three minutes tops over a two hour running time.

Anyway, back to Melanie: with that Betty Boop voice of hers and the fact that there used to be a good actress in her somewhere (see Working Girl), I haven't shared the same violent reaction to her casting. It's actually piqued my curiosity. Hope to hear some good reports about her...

I dunno...I think that Melanie's pretty much damned if she does and damned if she doesn't as far as straight play/musical goes. Either way, people are going to fling mud at her before they see her actually do anything. Most "Hollywood" stars that I see wind up surprising me, particularly Mary Stuart Masterson in Nine (be honest--did ANYONE think when she was cast that she could sing like that?) and Jon Secada in Cabaret (who I thought would suck but pulled off quite a performance). I'm hoping Melanie is also one of those surprises.

I find particularly disturbing the constant harping on and criticism of her personal life. Is anyone here actually privy to the intimate conversations and details of her life with her husband? Maybe she goes to his show every night because they love being together. Maybe not. Who the heck knows? Antonio is a grown-up guy who can make his own decisions. All this, "Melanie is SOOO jealous and never lets Antonio out of her SIGHT...." Well, maybe he likes it. The point is, NONE of us know. It might be more appropriate, as Broadway fans, to assess her performance in CHICAGO and leave her private life alone.

yeah now see I could really care less about Antonio and their personal life and whatever. I feel that has absolutely nothing to do with the performance she'll give in Chicago.

My other thing is, as I just saw happen with Angie Stone.. Can she really make it 8 shows a week? I mean I'm not trying to set her up for failure or anything because like I said, it'll be great for her to prove us all wrong... but really... can she go 8 shows a week (AND kick ass????)

She may shock everybody & act/sing & dance the hell out of the role. We shall see . I think Mr Banderas should next tackle an original musical he was born to play Z The Musical. He played Zorro in the movies so why not the singing zorro on stage.

I am seeing her in Chicago on August. I am kind of excited because I saw Chicago so many years ago, I kind of forget it. I have been meaning to see it again. My friend wanted to see it with Melanie. She may be good. I do not think she would undertake the role, if she felt she could not do it.....re: re: re: GOD! I hope Melanie kicks ass.......................

I do not give a rat's fart about her personal life! It does not affect me in any way. BUT I do take exception when NON dancers do Fosse dance numbers & have to have the choreography transposed to a level where some one in a wheelchair could do it. ( & that is not a dis to the physically challenged I have seen modern works with w/c dancers & they work. But that ain't Fosse!)

voiceanth has got a point though.

i mean personally i think mel will suck, but who knows, we don't know yet.

I understand everyone's frustrations. i see it this way, she has to stand up against giants like Gwen Verdon, Liza Minnelli, Anne Reinking, Ruthie Henshall and Chita Rivera to act sing and dance Roxie. I just don't know if she can do it! I think she can act and sing it, no doubt, but dance it?? who knows, she might very well stun the hell outta us. Someone go and please report, lol. re: : re: GOD! I hope Melanie kicks ass....................... Updated On: 7/9/03 at 02:33 PM
