New Kushner Piece

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

I saw a reading of this with Marcia Gay Harden as Laura Bush a few months ago as part of an evening of Kushner one acts dubbed "Tiny Kushner" at the Schimmel Center at Pace. Kushner greeted the audience and then afterwards, Jeffrey Wright performed "East Coast Ode To Howard Jarvis" (a monologue), Ben Schenkman and Linda Emond performed a fascinating and very funny one act play called "Terminating, or Sonnett LXXV." Then, a VERY pregnant Harden did the opening scene of "Only We Who Guard The Mystery Shall Be Unhappy" (I remember reading this scene in The Nation about two years ago) in which Laura Bush reads the "The Brother Karamazov" to a group of dead Iraqi children, who speak in only bird noises. Rita Wolf co-starred as the Angel (Wolf was featured in Kushner's "Homebody/Kabul"). Harden was wonderful (and absolutely nailed a Texas accent) -- when Kushner finishes the full work, Harden HAS to play Laura. A very interesting and entertaining piece.

Mitchell and Clarkson should do fine with it. FYI -- it's not a full evening work at this point. I'd guess that it runs no more than 40 minutes or so (I suppose the roundtable will help fill out the evening).

I'm getting sick that I don't live in NYC (yet). I would SO be there. Patricia Clarkson! OMG!

And it's a benefit for MoveOn so I would pay 10X the ticket price.

...If I could afford to live in NYC of course.

The benefit last night was really terrific. JCM and PC were fantastic as the "First Lady" and "Angel". I definitely need to find out more information on this work.

I saw Edie Falco, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Randy Harrison in the audience.

There's not much more to know than what you saw. That was the opening scene of a "work-in-progress." Kushner hasn't given out anymore details regarding the rest of the play. Here's the text which appeared as a cover story in the Nation last year:

I just read the text (thanks Margo!) - it's effective and brilliant. The Nation site also mentions that performance rights will be "happily" given to anyone staging anti-war events. My college's drama society is looking for relevant, thought-provoking texts to put on; I think I'm gonna pass this on to them.

Also, in my LiveJournal I posted a couple of Salon.com articles about the reading.

It was fab imho, Kushner is a genius and I was a bit overwhelmed seeing JCM and PC. Even as a native NYer and an actor used to seeing and dealing with celebs, this was a real treat for me.
