oh I assumed you meant the new William Finn ELEGIES. i remember that other recording now, some great ballads; who's the composer?
Will: They don't give out awards for helping people be gay... unless you count the Tonys.
"I guarantee that we'll have tough
times. I guarantee that at some point
one or both of us will want to get out.
But I also guarantee that if I don't
ask you to be mine, I'll regret it for
the rest of my life..."
I was thinking...Maybe if Mandy Pitinkin was the play Banderas' part, he'd be good. i think he has the look and an escellent voice. plus, he could manage an accent much better. any thoughts??
Amy Spanger is an idea. She's the only one mentioned who I can truly picture as Carla. She's got the right amount of sexiness and she could belt "A Call From the Vatican" to great effect.
And I doubt they told Alice to hold back on "A Call From the Vatican." That is the belt song of Nine, and if anything, she would have been encouraged to let loose. Instead, it was a slow, boring, breathy interpretation that I'm guessing was Alice's attempt to be seductive and sexy while attempting to channel a bit of Anita Morris. The weird thing is, her other song on the C.D., "Please Let's Not Even Say Hello," is so amazingly done! I was wondering what happened.
Mandy Patinkin as Guido would be wrong, simply because he's not a baritone. Has anyone heard Jonathan Pryce as Guido on the London recording? It's just...wrong. The suggestion I'm most thrilled with is John Stamos.
True. But Jane's set to stay on through November, and who knows how long Amy will be contracted in Urinetown. They probably wouldn't cast her as Carla anyway, they're looking for big names.
I can't believe that so many theatre-saavy people on this board are thinking that John Stamos could handle the intricacies of Guido Contini!
Did anyone else see him in HOW TO SUCCEED...? He was so lackluster and obviously trying to do a Matthew imitation that it was distracting. He is appealing to look at, though...
Whoever suggested Eartha Kitt as Liliane is dead on! That's a perfect choice. I also like the Judy Kuhn as Luisa option.
Now the question remains ... Guido... Mandy? God, no. Raul Esparza, maybe? Is Kevin Kline too old? Obviously, Raul Julia seemed way past 40 when he played Guido... I must admit, I'm at a loss for an Antonio replacement...
Itty Bitty Geisha?
Toyland?
Gypsy Pasadoble?
Just a few popular favorites...
Antonio's also set to stay for November. In fact, I think the majority of the original cast is staying with the exception of Laura Benanti (who's going into The Violet Hour) and Deidre Goodwin (who's playing Velma opposite Melanie in Chicago).
And apparently, John Stamos has improved since H2$. I heard a lot of good things from those who saw him in Cabaret. Kevin Kline is another idea. The question is, can he sing it?
A friend of mine who was involved with casting the original production of NINE has long wanted to see Jimmy Smits play Guido. He says Smits can sing well enough for the role.
I think Lauren Kennedy would be awful as Carla. She might be an OK Claudia though.
Eartha Kitt for Liliane and Judy Kuhn for Luisa sound like great ideas.
