What a wonderful night for Broadway theater! The Tony voters got it right this year! I was almost positive that what happened to Urinetown was also going to happen to Avenue Q (winning book and music but not best musical.) Thank God I was wrong! That innovative group of young minds was SO deserving! Thank you Tony voters for "voting your heart." YAY for creative new musicals!!!
Other reasons this was a great awards show: 1) Phylicia Rashad became the first African American woman to win the Tony for best actress. 2) I Am My Own Wife won! 3) Henry IV won! 4) Assassins won! 5) Idina won...even though she sounded like a vacuum sucking in all that air last night.
and the highlight of my evening...Kathleen Marshall beat the talentless Jerry Mitchell and Wayne Cilento. I'll have to agree with Reidel on this one when he says that Kathleen Marshall is the only one that belongs on Broadway in that category...the others aren't even good enough to choreograph in Atlantic City.
What a great night for theater!!
All you producers take a hint...innovation is the key! There is great work being presented all over the country by incredible composers...stop searching through your local Blockbusters for musical ideas.
bestofbroadway- You only wish you had a hot ass like Jerry Mitchell.
"I'm learning to dig deep down inside and find the truth within myself and put that out. I think what we identify with in popular music more than anything else is when someone just shares a truth that we can relate to. That's what I'm searching for in my music." - Ron Bohmer
"I broke the boundaries. It wasn't cool to be in plays- especially if you were in sports & I was in both." - Ashton Kutcher
After Wicked lost a few major awards early on & the camera panned in on Stephen Schwartz, he did not look like a happy camper. 2 big upsets in 1 weekend- first Smarty Jones & Wicked getting whacked badly. It will be interesting to see what happens to the box office fortunes of Wicked & Ave Q
"first Smart Jones & than Wicked getting whacked badly"
Mr. Roxy --
If you're such an "educated individual" (as you and "Mrs. Roxy" profess, please be advised that the horse's name was not "Smart Jones" and your use of "than" was completely incorrect.
Just a matter of the "pot" calling the "kettle!"

How is Jerry Mitchell talentless ? While the choregraphy in Hairspray isn't mindblowing, it's colorful, fun, energetic and enjoyable.I've seen enough shows and done quite a few to recognize terrible choregraphy when I see it and HS does not fit into that category, being a big dance musical, especially.
Wicked's not as big of a dance musical, but I wouldn't dare to call Wayne Cilentro talentless, either. The dancing was good and served it's purpose in the large dance numbers.
I couldn't disagree any more. AVENUE Q was very funny and witty, bt WICKED was much stronger, and more worthy of the title 'Best Musical'. At least, that's what I think.
