West End cheap B & Bs

Coming to London in mid May, looking for tips on where to stay near Covent Garden/West End that won't break the bank so we can spend the travel budget on theatre tickets.  I used to stay at a little B&B steps away from Covent Garden, but that was in the late '80s, and I'm suspecting things have changed somewhat.  Any tips from the locals (or recent visitors) of where to stay close by?  Doesn't need to be remotely fancy, as long as it's safe and within walking distance of the theatres.  We'll be in London for about a week.
