The marketing for this show has been mind-numbingly bad, from its first press performance to its current playbill logo. There is so much potential in how to position this show and they failed it in every which way.

And yes, this should have kept the tryout in DC. The cancelled it for obvious Covid reasons last winter but they should have not just staged this production cold.

I know this isn't the point of your post, but I don't believe it's the first Broadway show composed by an Asian-American, as I believe Jay Kuo ofAllegiancefrom a few years ago fits that bill.

No you're 100% right! I left out the word "woman" - the first Broadway show composed by an Asian American woman.

are you in the show, because one of the cast members tweeted something similar today...also you seemed to have joined the day after the show started previews...

I mean I am still waiting for your actual thoughts on the show since the day after first preview you wrote in the other thread

"The preview last night was spectacular - probably the most fun I've ever had at a Broadway show! It looked nothing like the videos posted online in person. Will share full thoughts soon!"

and then two people called you out as a shill and you just for some reason never expanded on your original statement

"

Okay you got me - you're a genius! Instead of spending millions on marketing, KPOP instead just paid a random dude (me) to post on the broadwayworld.com forum and convince one person at a time to see it. It's a bold strategy, but will be very interesting to see if it pays off long term for them!

Another theory is that I really liked it, joined the board to talk about it, then immediately got lambasted by you. But that would make too much sense - I prefer your theory! Okay, this is boring for everyone else. Keep sharing your very interesting conspiracy theories but I'll just ignore threads if you're in them moving forward.

I just want to point out for the record DCS was the user who first called you out in the other thread, not me...

You still haven't actually posted your thoughts on the show itself as you said you would.

and now you are suddenly posting in non KPOP threads as of 20 minutes ago.

Seriously, they could counteract all the mediocre reviews by just releasing the cast album already. The audience is literally dancing out the theatre while they play songs from the show, why just keep showing those same four production photos? It's not doing itself any favors.

There has to be money to record the show. If there isn't money to do appropriate marketing, they aren't likely to find the money to record it. Especially since the cast recording would see a very limited return, and would not likely contribute to future amateur productions. We'll see what happens, but it doesn't seem like it is in the cards.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, as I'm not really in the know about anything behind the scenes of a production.

But does it cost anything to release tracks that already exist? By no means is it a full album, but there are at least 7 songs that have been fully recorded. I'm wondering why marketing isn't using them more; to my knowledge, only one of them (This is My Korea — TV edit) has been released publicly.

That depends on how that material is contractually allowed to be used. The one promotional track that exists is likely the only one that was recorded. Equity has rules on how performers are compensated andwhere, when, and how promotional material can be used.

Promotional tracks are not a cast recording and cannot be treated as such.

It's almost a shame the book is all about the perils of being a K-Pop star, because they could really use the support of an actual K-Pop star or management agency to be a celebrity producer.

During the Instagram Live that Amy did on Playbill over the weekend, Amy confirmed an album was coming soon and one of the other members of RTMIS mentioned filming a video to tell people to pre-save the album. Not sure if this means the album is already done or if they’re going to record it soon, but it sounds like it’s forthcoming.

Gross.

Looks like the cast and creatives have responded to The NY Times review and particularly didn’t like the “squint inducing” comment, citing racist tropes.  I think that’s a bit of a stretch… even the wording might not be… the best… I highly doubt Jesse Green was trying to be racist in his review. But hey…whatever they need to do to sell tickets to that sinking ship…

Agreed. If you read it in context it’s clearly saying the lights are super bright. That’s it. No racism.

This whole bash the critics trend is so… blah.

The remark that made me laugh was in Adam Feldman’s review in Time Out where he said the “well-drilled cast.” Meaning, the choreography….  But the wording …

The first time I saw the show I was in a seat where the lights during Superstar were blindingly bright, I literally went into intermission like I had an eye exam. So I get the "squint-inducing" lighting comment.

That said, couldn't anyone at the Times been like, "Hey, so this phrasing? Considering the show, maybe find a replacement?" I didn't even think of it when I read it, but I'm not the audience who could be offended by it. And they should've thought of that.

I totally understand what Jesse Green meant, and I don't think he meant any harm by it, but part of the discourse around racial sensitivity isn't just for the people who are intentionally racist but for the terms/phrases used that might have had a negative connotation to a specific group of people.  To be honest it's not something I had picked up on when reading the review (and I'm Asian myself) but to a large segment of the Asian population I think our eyes being described as "squinty" still triggers some bad memories.

On a broader scale, it does seem like their marketing has picked up with some videos of the different songs showing up in my Instagram feed and the comments generally seem to be excited about it (though not sure how many of those are production insiders).  I saw it again this past weekend and having an enthusiastic audience really makes a difference as well.  If they could afford to add glow sticks to their merch, I think that would only add to the experience (though I guess there's the hazard of them turning on at the wrong times).

Would people over the age of 30 even know what to do with a lightstick or know anything of kpop culture & fanchants to use it? It would end up being a cash grab that wouldn’t work unless they loved the show enough by intermission or they planted somebody in the front audience to lead the lightstick waving to some degree…

Unrelated to your comment, I can’t believe they would push the cast album so far back that the show will nearly definitely be closed by the time lightsticks or the album releases. Those press clips still look beyond tacky on tiktok even with the re-recording- The costumes look very cheap, the set still looks like a screen, and according to a friend who saw Kpop, the lyrics sound too americanized for the Korean audience (with a key highlight being a song where they apparently just say “I am a Korean Man!!!” at one point). And Kpop fans are not flocking to see Luna, especially since k-pop’s other Loona is in the news cycle more negatively as of late. Unless they can get a member or TWICE, girls generation, or another successful group, they will not survive past January 21st. Or according to that other person in this thread, November 27th

Context is important. It was a critique of the lighting design, not the show itself.

There are way better phrases to use about bright lights. And yes, “squint” is a triggering word, especially when paired with the work of the Asian lighting designer. It’s a jerk reaction, sure, but it’s not for marketing reasons; it’s justified.

I think sensitivity around language affecting the Asian community hasn’t yet become mainstream. I think it’s really important to listen when people react this way, even when it’s unintentional.

With heavy use of produced tracks, vocals could probably be mixed and mastered sooner rather than later. They could rush this out if they wanted. And I hope they do, the songs are so catchy.

Luna was out last night.
