Has anyone else watched this yet on Hulu?

I thought the trailer looked pretty bad and generic, but after the rave reviews it’s been getting, I decided to give it a shot. Maybe I’m just a cynical gay man who doesn’t get the allure of Fire Island as a place, but this movie did absolutely nothing for me. It was so bland and unfunny, and DEATHLY sincere about everything.

The two lead performances are boring, and all the side characters are just there for comedic relief. But any “comedy” that arises is in spite of the script, not because of it. It’s wildly uneven and doesn’t earn any of its treacly sentimentality, but is clearly so high on its own supply, it doesn’t care.

I’d love to hear other folks’ opinions. Did I miss something?

I kind of feel like you just summed up the Las Cultraristas podcast with Bowen and Matt - who are in the movie.

I’ll check out the movie but I don’t think it’ll be my thing.

You didn't miss anything. I found it overbearing and overrated.

I thought it was fine. It reminded me of the gay straight-to-video movies, like Eating Out.

I watched it and it kind of came and went. Like, it was just uneventful. I thought it would be funnier, more scathing, more interesting. Like Margaret Cho's character was there... did she lose the house? Did she not? This whole "it's our last summer" felt forced. Basically, things unfolded how you'd think they'd unfold. Just nothing too interesting.

I'm excited to see "Bros" on Hulu.

Bros is a theatrical release.

All the eye candy could not hide the terrible acting, especially from the two leads.  I don't get all the hype for Bowen Yang and his tired schtick.

It's kind of interesting the headlines are all about how it's an Asian, queer headlined movie - which it is - but it's still about attractive, skinny, good looking men. So it's not like it's that revolutionary. The one bigger/thicker character was barely there and was seen as 'not fun.' So it's a "eh" for me.

I thought it was cute but nothing more. I guess us gays deserve our lame romantic comedy/Hallmark type movies too. I have to admit I don't really understand pop culture at the moment and who the public chooses to exalt. I find Yang and Rogers mildly amusing but not really sharp or observant. Seems most people with a platform these days are very "basic" and just complain and babble. They don't really offer commentary.

As for Fire Island, most of the acting was mediocre, and the overweight black male was truly there just to check a box. He didn't exist as a character or even get a storyline. Is that what inclusion means?

I will say it was nice to represent the "non cool" gay men. Those of us who can't afford the lifestyle that is typically shown by the gay media. Also, Conrad dancing will live in my head rent-free forever. So cute.

I've yet to read any good reviews about this movie. I've only read bad reviews - from critics and viewers. I can take five minutes of Yang in a Saturday Night Live skit - more than that and I start to cringe.

I love me some Fire Island, but I won't go near anything released straight (or gay) to a streaming service by a major studio.
