And steals its basic premise from The Wizard of Oz. What an odd project this is."
Also, unlike either of those projects "your life is never full of color until it’s full of love” isn't exactly the most empowering message for a female character, if, as I assume, they mean romantic love exclusively.

Yeah I think she might have been involved in one of the readings, although not the most recent one? And Kat McPhee mentioned that Shoshana Bean has recorded demos for the show too.
I actually quite like ‘Something To Shout About’, the simplicity of it and the way it builds and builds - although seems like it would be a total vocal chord killer having to sing it 8 days a week!
So Foster is writing the music--who is doing the lyrics? I admit a lot of 80s schlock pop is a guilty pleasure but I think Foster's strength is in over the top production, not songwriting. (Has he done a musical before? I guess the horrible WB attempt at a Disney musical, Quest for Camelot, with Carole Bayer Sager lyrics where The Prayer is from...)
Ever since I was a kid I have been obsessed with the Fleischer shorts ever since I was a kid, even then I realized the weirder pre Hayes code ones were better (especially for Betty Boop who had to trade in her dog boyfriend, Bimbo--Betty started off with dog ears too--for a cute puppy, old Grampy, and no more strapless miniskirts...) But I think it's simply not a property that can be expanded into a feature, let alone a stage musical...
Was ‘Quest For Camelot’ bad? I have absolutely zero recollection of it but I know I wore out that VHS tape in my youth. In fact I remember wanting that to be made into a stage show - but cannot tell you anything about it story-wise.
Really, really hope Kim Exum continues with this. Saw her in The Book of Mormon the other night and she is just radiant - and she looks just like Betty Boop.
They/them.

It shouldn’t be news they’re looking for investors, they had that big invited presentation last year for that very purpose.
I remain kind of skeptical it’ll make it to Broadway.

Having a role cast does not mean it will end up on Broadway, whatever the stated end goal of the project is.
This is a show that has been in development hell for something like a decade and has seen a lot of turnover of prominent writers and actors… and adapted from an intellectual property that had its peak 90 years ago and has had numerous attempts at a revival fail to materialize over the last several decades.
Boop is recognizable today as a symbol but not as a character people actually engage with. And the original early cartoons like “Minnie the Moocher” hold up very well as weird, subversive relics of the pre-Hayes Code, pre-Disney dominance era. But a huge musical production has to make the case for Boop being relevant in 2023. She’s certainly distant enough from today’s audience that you can take creative liberties and make alterations but then what’s the point? She’s a caricature of flapper culture.

They filed a Form D with the SEC in April 2023, and had not formally raised any money at that point. (They may have had informal commitments, etc., but the SEC filing says the first sale had yet to occur.)
Minimum capitalization is $23,750,000; offering amount is $26,000,000.

For a comparison point, Some Like it Hot’s capitalization was $17.5 mil, MJ’s was $22 mil, and Moulin Rouge’s was $28 mil- and I assume the latter two had to pay a lot of royalties for their music (especially MR, though the production itself is quite large).
Boop targeting an amount between MJ and Moulin Rouge seems absolutely wild to me.
