A workshop took place earlier this month and, as far as I’m aware, it is still set to play in Chicago this summer. From Taylor Iman Jones Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/CXrx356P76j/?utm_medium=copy_link

The lack of star power on this project is so baffling.

Does this NEED a star? Is Elton Johns name not enough anymore? I think this will sell well no matter who is in it.

As a Broadway writer, Elton John is two for three: the biggest musical since Phantom, an unexpected cult favorite that launched a Hollywood career for several of its young leads, and then Lester (his sole failure).

Not one has an a-list star as part of its original production.

I thought the point of these uninspired adaptions of blockbuster films from yesteryear was that the title IS the star?

Just to point Elton also wrote the score to AIDA, which wasn’t a smash hit, but still has some socko tunes in it.

Assuming the smash is "The Lion King" which I'd say isn't selling on Elton's name. The second being "Aida?" Which I could see how that might have sold on his name. But yeah, it didn't help Lestat which didn't even get recorded.

I'd say the show IS the star, but that said, everyone is going to expect big things from whoever is playing Miranda as that has become kind of a gay icon character. And I don't really see that part being a big broadway belty part, so kind of curious to see how this turns out. Like, I don't see it as a big show either. Kind of a Diana level design wise.

Unlike other film-to-stage adaptations, this one feels like it could be a winner. It doesn’t need any stars attached; the movie was a hit and remains in the pop culture consciousness 15+ years later.

And as others have noted, they just wrapped a major workshop not long ago with the same main cast that has participated in the last couple workshops. It’s very much still happening.

I’m also intrigued by Anna D Shapiro directing. Isn’t this her first big musical?

I am seeing Beth Leavel perform with the Austin Cabaret Theatre this coming January 22, 2022 (keeping my fingers crossed).

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

Totally forgot about  Billy Elliot - I'd say that score is "meh" with the design/production the real star.

Whoops! He’s three for four, though Aida hasn’t had quite the prosperous afterlife as Billy Elliot. Oddly enough, that’s his only show with big star names to ever go in and out of it.

Since David Alvarez started in BILLY ELLIOTT and is now Bernardo in the film WSS, I’m assuming the above poster was counting BILLY ELLIOTT as show #2. Who doesn’t love a good riddle to kick off the new year?

Elton John/Devil Wears Prada should be enough to get people in the door if it's any good.

As we know, the problem with casting celebrities in a Broadway musical is that they are generally hard to replace. The show becomes about them. There is an audience while they are in the show (if you're lucky), and then when they leave, sales nosedive and it closes. That's okay for a revival, but for a new musical you hope for a longer shelf life on Broadway.

I agree that this could sell just fine without super-stars. The name recognition of the piece plus Elton’s involvement will have people curious enough in the beginning. If it manages to be good, positive reviews, word of mouth, and awards nominations/wins will carry it through. And if sales start to lag, that’s the time to start stunt-casting Miranda. Of course if it’s lackluster, it’ll implode once the initial curiosity wears off.

We’re now less than 90 days before this show allegedly starts its out of town Chicago tryout and there’s been no news or even tickets on sale for this… I was told yesterday by the Broadway in Chicago sales manager that this is likely being pushed back by 3 weeks to open early August this year, or to winter 2023, with a spring Broadway opening… and that they’re still trying to work out schedules with the creatives… namely Elton John…

I was wondering about this the other day... seems odd that there hasn't been so much as a peep about this recently.

Could be any number of factors, not just John’s availability. Shaina’s recovering from a positive case and is working on Suffs, and we could probably get more news within the next month or two once rehearsals have started. Casting is probably still being worked out, too, for all we know.
