Here's more precise info on the Geffen Playhouse production of THE INHERITANCE quoted from the Geffen website:

"To launch its 2022/2023 season next year, Geffen Playhouse will present the Stephen Daldry production of playwright Matthew Lopez’s The Inheritance, directed by Mike Donahue. The Inheritance was previously announced as part of the original Geffen Playhouse 25th Anniversary season."

So the Daldry production, but directed by Mike Donahue. Make of that what you will.

Productions not directed by Stephen Daldry which will so easily show that this play was the gay Emperor's New Clothes.

Funnily, I thought Daldry's direction already confirmed that the Emperor had relatively few clothes in the first place, Tony awards notwithstanding.

For me, THE INHERITANCE is easily in the top ten experiences I’ve had in fifty years of theatre going. I hope the Tony wins will give more people the chance to see it.

I had a lot of issues with The Inheritance - in the way it was written, and in the way it was directed. But I think it grew on me in the weeks/months after I saw it. The longer I sat with it, the more I appreciated its strong points and forgot/forgave its numerous flaws.

But then I kind of stopped thinking about it for the past year - it really just hasn't occupied much space in my mind, and so I think that caused me to feel more cold toward it. And even as recently as last night I was kind of indifferent about its Best Play win. But today I've been reflecting back on it more, and once again I'm finding myself more impressed in retrospect with Matthew Lopez's dramaturgical achievement. And I feel more at peace with its Tony wins than I did last night (though I still would've voted for Sound Inside)

I actually like the idea of seeing a production that utilizes Daldry's staging and concepts, but someone else directing the actors. IMO Daldry has a tendency to encourage overacting. Some actors manage to overcome it, but I feel like they do so in spite of his direction rather than because of it.

For what it’s worth, Boston is getting a regional production in the spring:

Has anyone seen the Boston production at Speakeasy Theater? Reviews I've read were positive. But I'd like to know more about how it differs from the Broadway staging.

Strange that the Geffen hasn’t released a cast list or put tickets on sale. Wondering if this is still happening.

The Geffen's website lists performance dates as September 13 - November 27, 2023. Currently being sold as part of subscriptions; I wouldn't expect single tickets to be on sale until next year.

It’s listed for those dates in 2022, not 2023.

Well whew, that makes a lot more sense. Must have been a typo on the site, because I was surprised by the delay and checked it twice. Thanks for the correction.

I listened to the audio recording of the Geffen production on Audible. The cast is a consistent ensemble without the highs (and lows) of the Broadway cast. Eric is still a bland protagonist but he has more chemistry with his love interest than he did in NY previews.

The multiple storylines are stitched together awkwardly. The seams really show on a revisit. But the dramatic high points still wreck me. I’m glad this recording exists to preserve the work for a new audience.
