Remember a few years ago when everyone thought TOP HAT was a guarantee to transfer to Broadway. Never happened and doesn't look like it ever will.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I'm willing to place a bet on Cinderella, ALW placed a huge full page ad in the NY Times the other week. With a few theaters open, or will be possibly open in late Spring, it has a home, and  Cinderella is one of a few if not the only 'new' musical opening this season and then would take home the Tony!

Back to the Future just opened up in the West End with very positive reviews and feel like they need to create more anticipation and 'need' for it to come over to the States so soon.

Dreamgirls (Nicholaw version) is set to go on a big UK tour starting in Dec 2021-Dec 2022 and I thought Marisha Wallace was AMAZING, and blew Amber out of the water - the new Effie, Nicole Raquel Dennis is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!   She needs to be with this production when it comes over to Broadway!

I'm hoping MARY POPPINS transfers to Broadway. It's time we have Charlie Stemp back on this side of the pond

I'm so surprised we haven't had a  Dreamgirls yet. But not this version. We want a new, interesting version.

I can't imagine Back to the Future transferring that fast, unless the leads were on like 6 month contracts.

I thought Marisha Wallace did a great "And I am Telling You" but I have to agree the production itself felt rather pedestrian to me. Surely someone with a little more imagination might want to try something new in New York? I just don't know why they would bother trying to bring it over...

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I am not sure where you come up with "one of a few, if not the only 'new' musical." There are already seven new musicals for the 2021-2022 Tony Season: Diana, Flying Over Sunset, Girl from the North Country, MJ, Mrs. Doubtfire, Paradise Square and Six. A Strange Loop could make it in after its run at Woolly Mammoth this fall, and other new musicals are rumored or circling. ALW could surely get a theatre if he wants one this spring, but some Cinderella clear path to the Tony Award is not assured.

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

Jordan Catalano said: "The West End version is FAR superior to the mess that was on Broadway. One of the best leading performances I’ve seen in years and a GORGEOUS production that deserves to be seen here in NY. "

Exactly. I saw it in Liverpool two years ago and am seeing it again in London this coming week!

I just saw the west end production of Amelie and it is an incredibly beautiful, innovative piece of theatrical direction, design and performance. The choral harmonies are beautiful as is watching and hearing the actors dual as the orchestra and perform right in front of you.

It reminds me a lot of the Once On This Island revival - clever staging and very heavy handed direction that elevates the material to the absolute highest it can be. There will never, ever be a better production.

I am absolutely devastated for everyone involved that this was not the production seen in New York and I think it might have been more successful if it was. I only look at the Broadway poster and cringe - what were they thinking?

Unfortunately, if you care about a coherent story and structure, fleshed out characters, and a score that has a bit more to it than pretty sounds and a couple good songs I don’t think the production can solve these problems at all. I would be shocked if it made it back to Broadway and I don’t think it seems like the kind of thing that could be commercially viable off Broadway.

But it’s just so beautiful. Someone get this director another job stat!!

I'm in a small camp that finds this so gorgeous, even on Broadway. I love it. And it sounds like (listening wise) that they've figure out the show. The Broadway production just didn't feel it to me. The design felt lacking, the direction. I'd love to see this production tour the US or something. But I kind of doubt it at this point.

Harriet Craig said: "The discussion on here so far has all been about musicals, but I wonder if anyone has heard anything about a possible Broadway transfer of Tom Stoppard’s play, Leopoldstadt? I had a ticket to see it in London in June 2020, won’t be able to get to London before it closes there next month, and would love to be able to see it on Broadway."

Leopoldstadt is scheduled to play Toronto January to March 2022. I wonder if it can gain enough steam and open on Broadway before the end of the season.
