I haven't seen anyone on TikTok complaining about the price. In fact, many people are surprised that it's only $5, which is basically pocket change. It's the perfect price point to sell the highest number of tickets and raise a hefty amount for the Actors Fund. I was more than happy to spend it.

I just can't get on board with this. The whole thing is just slightly absurd to me. Doesn't help that I am not a Pixar fan at all.

It's pretty clear that the only reason Disney allowed this to go on was as a fundraiser. They most likely stipulated that everyone viewing it had to have donated, not wanting their IP to be adapted and reused completely willy-nilly; but the producers, wanting to keep it accessible, negotiated the minimum donation at $5.

This explanation makes the mandatory donation make sense.

While I agree that this is a perfect storm situation with Disney allowing this to go on, someone on Twitter pointed out that this might send a message to rights holders to be less precious with their IPs, and allow young writers to get the chance to create adaptations.
"

I won't lie, I wondered how the heck Disney allowed this, they even started using it on some of their own socials...I'm not complaining about that part, mind you, but considering it's a parody (at least that's how I read into it) isn't it considered 'fair use'? I'm no expert, just going on what I know because even JKR put a stop to Very Potter Musical and that was parody as parody could get so there was no reason for her to do that, but because she's JKR, she get what she wants...

IT IS HAPPENING!!!

Remy the ratatouille...you do realize Remy is a rat and ratatouille is food, right...?? This whole thing is absolutely bonkers. I can't believe it. Spongebob? Sure. I'll be open minded about that. They did a fantastic job. But RATATOUILLE??? No. No. Absolutely not. Am I the only one who is opposed and thinks this is ridiculous??
"

This part. However, I'll take this for the ridiculousness that it is, I really don't think it's meant to be taken that seriously. Just silly fun camp to make people smile in rough times, and I'm not opposed to raising funds for the Actors Fund, we all should be supportive of that. I've read it as a parody along the lines of "Very Potter Musical" (see post above). And yes, I tend to hope that numbers' lyrics has been changed because it reeks of them not knowing that ratatouille is the literal veggie peasant dish, not the French translation for rat...

@JennH

I’m curious if you’ve read my earlier post about this - post #5, page 1 of this thread.

Them “not knowing what Ratatouille is” was 100% an intentional joke. That initial song was very much a parody, and actually I’ve heard that the “curated” version of the show that was put together on TikTok doesn’t even include this initial song because it was entirely a joke song.

It's clearly a joke, especially since the movie itself makes it very clear what ratatouille is- the whole climax hinges on it.

I can't see why anyone's hackles would get raised over this. It's a fun charity event. It costs less than a number of higher profile events that have happened this year. It has a great, diverse cast. It will highlight young, unknown songwriters. Why are people being so precious about the sanctity of musical theater right now? This seems a lot more inventive than most of the warmed over stuff that was actually ON Broadway when it shut down.

Honestly, I have never seen the film but I am so theater starved and the cast looks great.

Also, re: $5 - are people here really confused about how fundraising events work? Sheesh.

Do you think they’re going to extend the songs beyond their 1 minute TikTok versions? A whole show of 60 second songlets would get old fast.

I follow a few of the people involved on TikTok. The songs are longer than they are in the videos. It's all new adaptations and arrangements with a full orchestra. The orchestra recorded the tracks last week.

I bought a ticket, it's $5 and the cast is great. Just hoping I can get the stream to play on my TV, looks like it will be possible.

I got the email from today tix but doesn't seem like the email matters anyway since it says this and I just assume it will show up at 7pm...

That's strange. I guess I'm out of the loop because this is my first virtual theatre stream in quite a while. Never heard of TodayTix doing a stream directly on their page. I'm having trouble picturing how that will work. I don't see an embedded video window on the show page - will one suddenly appear at 7:00? Unless I'm not on the right page...

Not sure, I've never watched any of these before either. It's on demand until Monday anyway if it doesn't work tonight but I expect there will be a link up at 7pm to watch it.

This is the most hilarious thing I've seen since the shutdown ,lol. This is hilariously stupid . I saw the original movie when it came out in 2007 and remember liking it accept for the lady with the gun at the beginning ...

Didn't Disney try making this a musical back in 2013 and even had a reading/lab? I sort of remember reading about it on here and I think Annaleigh Ashford was involved ???

Yea.....
I skipped to the end. Happy to support The Actor's Fund and all but the obvious cue card reading and zoom format alone are enough for me to be done. There's a reason they didn't go too much into how it would be presented.
The music is cute I guess.

This show should be the nail in the coffin for jukebox musicals. When a group of teenagers on the internet can write a more entertaining musical theatre score than Grammy-winning musical artists, it's time to change how we do theatre.
