What musicals still need to be revived through ENCORES?- Page 1

I am shocked that ENCORES has not revived the following shows:

City of Angels

Woman of the Year

BABY

Meet Me in St. Louis

The Will Rogers Follies

Barnum

Kiss of the Spider Woman

Blood Brothers

There are so many more, but all of these shows are either Tony Award winners or nominees, and they are all relatively old. If not the main season of ENCORES, maybe some of these would be good for the summer season? Thoughts? Add more shows!

Some would suffer from the scales down production.

Have they done Smile? It would be good to see a major presentation of the finished version of the show, given that “the Broadway version was not the good version” has become so notorious.

The last time this came up I think someone nominated Anthony Newley's 1962 Stop The World

"Once in a Lifetime"

"Gonna Build a Mountain"

"What Kind of Fool An I"

Good friends Anthony Newley and Sammy Davis

Stop the World and Camelot would be good choices.

I'm disappointed they are doing Into the Woods. Not because Into the Woods isn't a wonderful show, but because it is revived and seen often enough, from professional companies all the way down to high school drama clubs, that it doesn't need an Encores production. The whole point of Encores was to revive shows that hadn't been heard in awhile.

City of Angels is desperate for a revival. That being said, to really “sell” the B&W/Colour concept of the show, you need a strong physical production (lighting, sets, costumes). I wonder if some of the impact would be lost with a paired down Encores run?

It is one of my all time favorites but I agree with you on this. I was surprised they were doing it also. I will probably try to see it but if I don't I won't be upset.

I would love to see them do "Stop The World..." I played the Sammy Davis cast recording to death when it came out.

I would also like to see them do "Purlie" (If they haven't already.

Another show I would like to see them do is "Platinum". I saw it twice in Philly before it went to Broadway.

Purlie was done in 2005 by Encores starring Blair Underwood, Lillias White, Anika Noni Rose and John Cullum, not that they couldn't do it again. In fact, it might be timelier now than it was then. I recall going to see it and singing "Walk Him Up the Stairs" as I headed to the grand tier.

"Dear World" was done at Mufti starring Tyne Daly a few years ago, but I'd definitely see it again at Encores with the full orchestra. One show that Mufti has done several times that I'd like to see is "Darling of the Day". There are also a ton of shows that never had a cast recording. They could do a concert featuring songs from shows that were never recorded like they did with shows they were thinking of doing for "Hey Look Me Over!".

Thanks for the confirmation on "Purlie". I kind of thought they had done it, which is why I said "If they haven't already". I kinda thought I heard they did but wasn't sure. And yes, it would be timely.

I understand what you mean, but ENCORES have done gala presentations of Brigadoon, Sunday in the Park..., as well as other shows that rely on production elements like Merrily We Roll Along and Finian's Rainbow, which ended up transferring! I think they could come up with some creative ways to do the show even on a budget. I mean their EVITA production looked absolutely stunning and elaborate. Plus, ENCORES original intention for producing shows was about showcasing the score. And that City of Angels score is such a gem.

Over Here! (or York Theatre could do it)

Oliver! (yes it's done regionally, but Broadway has only seen it in concert for almost 40 years)

The Full Monty (unless Roundabout gets there first)

Jelly's Last Jam

Marie Christine (with Audra again)

The Rink

Seesaw

A Time for Singing

"Promises, Promises" - they did it in the 1990s with Martin Short, Christine Baranski, and Kerry O'Malley, but I wish they would do it again if only to wash out the bad taste that woefully miscast and executed 2009 revival left in my mouth!

I would love to see The RinkThe ActWoman of the YearThe Goodbye GirlRomance/RomanceRagsBabyA Day in Hollywood/A Night in the UkraineThe RothschildsCocoSeesawShenandoahRaisin, and Little Me, to name a few. These are not musicals I know terribly much about, but they are musicals that are unlikely to be seen in major productions (and certainly not with full orchestras) unless Encores takes them on. Some of these shows may turn out not to be worth much today, but I would eagerly buy a ticket in order to be able to draw my own conclusions based on a solid production.

ETA: Right after I posted this, a few more occurred to me: 1600 Pennsylvania AvenueCatch My SoulThe Firebrand of Florence, Golden RainbowThe Grass HarpHigh Spirits, and Oedipus at Colonus--all of these fall in the same category of shows I fear I might not see a first-class production of anywhere else, and thus, would immediately purchase a ticket to an Encores staging.

Promises was most certainly not the place for Kristin Chenoweth to display her serious acting side, and quite a few left at intermission, but if they left they missed about a half hour of non-stop hilarity thanks to Katie Finneran with Sean Hayes and Dick Latessa supporting her.

I've said for years that Fade Out/Fade In would have been a great show for them to do with Leslie Kritzer or Ana Gasteyer.

I'd love to see 1600 Penn come back in a clever reconfiguration via Encores, given that its original conceit (that the actors playing the black characters find the play increasingly frustrating) has only gotten more prescient. I'm not sure if the Bernstein estate will ever loosen their grip on it, though.

You’re 100% right. SITPWG is a perfect example of a successful design-reliant Encores production.

I think best case scenario would be a successful Encores run that leads to a fully-realized revival run.

It’s a shame the Donmar production was scheduled for March 2020.
