I watched it last night and surprisingly enjoyed it (didn't get sleepy nor felt bored at all)! I've never read the play nor have I ever seen a production of it. Anyway, below is a trailer from youtube. Very diverse cast. Ends this evening. If $5 is too much, I did a search on youtube and productions/films of the play are easily available on there.
They set it up as charging $5 a piece for these and then go and just put them on YouTube for free. I’m fine with paying the $5 but it feels like a bait and switch - saying they’re only available for money and then just dropping them for free for everyone.
I thought it was awful. No humor, no tension, entirely flat. Samira Wiley was the only person who seemed to be giving any thought to her performance. Constance Wu looked completely checked out whenever she wasn't speaking.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
-John Guare, Landscape of the Body
Yes, very farkakte. Fwiw, if the $5 is divided amongst the actors on the basis of merit, there are some who should get $0.01. I can't count how many times I have seen Vanya, but I have never seen one this phoned in.
Yeah I watch most of them. Cant say I’m ever “excited” about it or find myself looking forward to any of them but it’s all we have right now so I do watch some. But as I’ve said a lot, the majority of what’s worth watching is still coming from the UK, who continues to provide the content that American theater won’t.
