Perhaps try another browser, or go to YouTube and search "Georgia Brown in 'Roza': 'Happiness'

Saw at Center Stage in Baltimore in the mid/late 80's.  Nothing special, except the performance by Georgia Brown.

The new movie "The Life Ahead" on Netflix, is a non-musical adaptation of this story.  It has Sophia Loren in the Georgia Brown role (Rosa), a woman who cares for the children of  prostitutes.

If you do watch it you should do so in its original Italian with English subtitles.  The English dubbed version is not that good.

Loren may get an Oscar nomination for this, and the kid who plays Momo is really good too.

I saw it in previews. I was watching the Netflix film and going: why do I know this plot! I'd forgotten all about it and it slowly came back to me. Momo is Arab not African and he is with Rosa a much longer time. But other than that I don't remember much else about the show except I don't think it was very good. Oh, and the trans character in the musical was played by Bob Gunton!

The source novel was previously made into a major 1977 film, "Madame Rosa," which won the Oscar for Best Foreign-Language Film and in which Simone Signoret won acclaim playing the title role.  Ten years later came Georgia Brown in the musical "Roza," and now the Sophia Loren film using the title of the novel, "La Vie Devant Soi" (The Life Ahead).

I agree .. watch it in Italian with subtitles. The dubbed version is dreadful. Changed the language after about 5 minutes . The movie is just ok.

Saw it on Broadway. The score was much better than anyone really remembers.  It's a shame it was never recorded and I'm not just saying that as a theater person who wants every show recorded.  This one deserved it.  Footlight Records sells the demo on CD.  I remember the set was based on M.C. Escher with stairs seeming to go up that actually were meant to go down and vice versa.  Something about a world turned upside down.  Bob Gunton was terribly miscast as a transgender character, despite giving his all and being very heartfelt.  Georgia Brown was absolutely brilliant with the thin book.  She soared in the songs and I recall the critics did not give her enough credit for being as raw as she was.  Prince had gone on record many times saying it was a mistake bringing the show to Broadway, that it was always intended to be a regional theater kind of show, whatever the heck that means. It didn't need to be two acts, that was its real flaw. But there was a big reveal at the end of act one when young Momo turns into older Momo during the song "Moon Like a Silver Window."
