And yet the owner took millions of dollars, laid off workers, and bought stock in Amazon.

If the strand goes down, Nancy Bass-Wyden will have no one to blame but her own greed.

"Shop stewards at the Strand, a prominent New York City bookstore, are denouncing owner Nancy Bass-Wyden for accepting federal loans but failing to keep workers on the payroll."

“ She is only one of countless business owners who have taken taxpayer money and proceeded to lay off workers—despite the threat of repercussions, in New York, from Governor Andrew Cuomo.”

“ Bass-Wyden also made multiple large purchases of Amazon stock during the shutdown, totaling $160,000-$400,000. According to public filings, she has added $2.25-$5.8 million in stock to her portfolio since March.”

In the age of personal responsibility remember, actions have consequences.

I was really upset until I started reading those things about her and comments from ex-employees. This is sad for current employees though.

I was going to buy something online from them when the announcement was made but their website was down. It is back up.

Just give the world Love.

Unfortunately Roxy won’t read your posts and will go on an anti-Obama rant blaming him for this.

Strand is hiding behind the facade of being a family-owned New York institution and modeling the behaviors and leadership of big businesses like Amazon. This media push to “save them” is so gross. I fell for it initially too, but I’m more than happy to support actual local bookshops in my neighborhood, like Sisters Uptown and Book Culture.

^Exactly. They don't take care of their employees and because it's well known, they are now getting a lot of sympathy. Please consider supporting actual small bookstores around NYC.  Westsider Rare & Used Books and Books of Wonder are the ones I frequent the most in my area. True gems, no jerk owners.

Yeah, f*ck the Strand.

How is this Cuomo's fault? Retailers, including the Strand, have been safely open for months. The Strand depends on a lot of tourist business- the lack of which is not the fault of the state government.

To say nothing of the fact that the Strand's owners also own the building, and they secured millions in government loans (and proceeded to lay off most of the staff anyway).

I’d say our next victim is the millions of useless death because the federal government isn’t doing anything. You’re delusional and it’s not worth engaging with you
