"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
I met him after a performance of The Producers in Rochester NY. He was an absolute delight and invited us backstage when he realized we had waited a half hour in the freezing temperatures just to meet him-a true gentlemen!
A first rate performer! Did anyone happen to catch his stint as Dolly and would like to share their views? I've always been curious about how he did in the role. I suppose it must've been great.
